STELLAR PITCHING LEADS TO SWEEP
For a second straight night, the Dash blanked the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Thursday from TicketReturn.Com Field. Matt Heidenreich and Euclides Leyer combined on a five-hitter in the Dash's 1-0 victory. Heidenreich retired the first 11 and scattered four hits in his seven frames, and Leyer earned his first save with two strong innings. Myrtle Beach hurler Jen-Ho Tseng took a perfect game into the seventh. Adam Engel led off with a single. Following a sacrifice bunt, Trey Michalczewski singled to right, and Mark Zagunis' throw beat Engel. However, Engel used a crafty slide to avoid the tag and give Winston-Salem the lead for good.
SWEEPING SUCCESS
Winston-Salem logged its first sweep of the year on Thursday night. The Dash, who failed on three other sweep chances this season, had not used the broom since August 1-3, 2014, at home against Lynchburg. This marks the first sweep for Winston against the Pelicans since August 24-26, 2013, while the Dash had not won every game of a series in South Carolina since a rain-shortened set from July 30-31, 2011. The Dash have won six consecutive contests in Myrtle Beach for the first time since at least 2004.
GRAND PITCHING
During the three-game series, Winston-Salem pitching held Myrtle Beach to just one run, which came around in the third inning of Tuesday's opener on a bases loaded walk. Myrtle Beach did not score in the series' final 24 innings, and the Pelicans mustered only 15 hits. The Dash have logged back-to-back shutouts for the first time since May 21 and 22, while Winston-Salem had not given up just a single run in three games since August 26-28, 2012.
THIRD TO NINE
Heidenreich became the third pitcher at the High-A level to reach nine personal victories, and Thursday's was his first since June 11. The Coronado, Calif., native is tied for 10th in the Minors in wins, and he is two shy of the top spot.
JONES TO REHAB FOR WINSTON-SALEM
Three-year big league veteran Nate Jones, a righty who pitched for Winston-Salem in 2008, 2009 and 2010, will begin an injury rehabilitation assignment with the Dash Friday. Jones is scheduled to pitch one inning for the Dash out of the bullpen in this opener with Potomac. In July of 2014, Jones underwent Tommy John surgery, and he has not pitched in a game since April 3, 2014. This marks the second rehab stint in the Dash era (2009-present). Infielder Brent Morel played in seven games with the Dash in 2012.
POTOMAC'S PAIN
Potomac spoiled BB&T Ballpark's debut on April 13, 2010, but that result belies how the Nationals have faired inside the Dash's new home. The Dash boast a 38-15 (.717) record against the P-Nats at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem has had a winning record against the Nationals in each of its first five seasons at the downtown facility, including a perfect 10-0 record in 2012. This season, the Dash took two of three at home from Potomac on the final three days of April. This set marks the P-Nats' final visit to the Triad.
TERRIFIC TOP THREE
The top three men in the Dash's order have been incredible as of late. Leadoff man Adam Engel is 8-for-21 (.381) with three RBIs and four runs in his last five games. Even though he went hitless on Thursday, Jake Peter has hit safely in 34 of his last 38 games since May 27. During this span, Peter is hitting .329 (47-for-143) with three homers, 21 RBIs and 26 runs scored. Three-hole hitter Trey Michalczewski is 7-for-15 (.467) with two RBIs in his last four contests. His 46 RBIs are third-most in the Carolina League.
DASH DOTS
Winston-Salem has not hit a home run since June 30, a span of 88 homerless frames...The Dash are last in the CL with 22 home runs, which are tied for fourth-fewest in the Minor Leagues...Mississippi and West Michigan are tied for the fewest at 17, while Fort Myers has 19.
