Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 10, 2015) - Big league rehabber Nate Jones tossed a scoreless inning in his first outing since April of 2014, and James Dykstra allowed only three unearned runs in seven innings, but the Winston-Salem Dash fell short of the Potomac Nationals 4-2 Friday at BB&T Ballpark.
Jones allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth inning in his first rehab appearance with the Dash. He only needed eight pitches to face the minimum. Friday marked Jones' first professional appearance since April 3, 2014, with the Chicago White Sox. He missed a few months in 2014 due to a back injury before suffering an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery.
Dykstra (3-7) dueled with Potomac's (10-5, 43-42) Austen Williams (1-0), who won his first-ever High-A start by yielding two runs in six innings. Dykstra only surrendered three unearned runs in the first inning by scattering six hits and one walk around five strikeouts.
Potomac's Narciso Mesa led off the game with a single against Dykstra. An error put runners on first and second, and then two batters later, Spencer Kieboom's single loaded with the bases. Dykstra retired Drew Ward, but during the at-bat to John Wooten, Dash (9-6, 39-46) catcher Omar Narvaez's pickoff throw to third rolled into left and allowed two runs to score. Later in the frame, Wooten knocked in a run with a base hit to put the Nationals up 3-0.
Winston-Salem answered immediately, with Adam Engel walking and advancing to second on a fielder's choice to begin the bottom of the first. Trey Michalczewski drove him in with a single, and then raced around to score from first on Keon Barnum's double to pull the Dash within 3-2.
However, the combination of Williams, Tyler Mapes and Manny Rodriguez kept the Dash off the board for the rest of the game. Mapes blanked the Dash in two frames in relief of Williams before Rodriguez earned his third save with a scoreless ninth.
With the score 3-2 in the ninth, Grant DeBruin doubled against Winston-Salem reliever Jefferson Olacio. Two batters later, Khayyan Norfork doubled in DeBruin to increase Potomac's advantage to 4-2.
Winston-Salem starts Jordan Guerrero (1-1, 4.84 ERA) Saturday against Potomac's Ian Dickson (0-0, 0.00 ERA). Pregame radio coverage is available at 6:15 p.m., with the first pitch at 6:30 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App.
Following Saturday's contest, all fans can enjoy a Postgame Fireworks show courtesy of Signs By Tomorrow Winston-Salem. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
