Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, Md.-The Frederick Keys hit into a season-high five double plays including a twin-killing to end the game, as the Salem Red Sox earned a 5-2 win on Friday night at Nymeo Field. Holding the Keys to 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position, the duo of Kevin McAvoy and Kyle Kaminska picked up 18 of their 27 outs via groundballs. Frederick starter Mitch Horacek posted the longest outing by a Frederick pitcher this year but was tagged with his ninth loss.
All five Red Sox runs came between the third and fifth innings, while four came with two outs. Following a solo homer by Chance Sisco in the home-first, Zach Kapstein leveled the ballgame in the third with a solo homer to left off Horacek (5-9). It was his first Carolina League home run.
With the game tied at one, the Red Sox grabbed the lead for good in the fourth. After Tzu Wei-Lin and Yoilan Cerse were retired, Kevin Heller coaxed a two-out walk, before scoring on a double by Mario Martinez. Mauricio Duban followed with a dunk single to center.
Salem completed its scoring in the fifth, thanks in large part to a double-steal by Zach Kapstein and Derek Miller which put runners at second and third. Lin brought in the first run on a groundout to first, while Cerse plated Miller via a single to left.
Horacek retired the final nine he faced, working through eight innings on just 82 pitches. He gave up five runs on five hit to go along with two walks and four strikeouts. The southpaw has suffered losses in four of his last five starts.
His counterpart, McAvoy (5-7) delivered his second quality start in three games, tossing six innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. He walked two and struck out four. Kaminska worked three scoreless innings to register his second save.
The Keys and the Red Sox play the second of three games on Saturday. Left-hander Chris Lee (2-4, 2.94) takes the mound for Frederick and will be opposed by southpaw Daniel McGrath (1-1, 1.80). First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. For tickets, fans can contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
