DASH DROP TWIN BILL OPENER
Thanks to two home runs from the Potomac offense, the Dash fell 6-2 in their doubleheader opener on Saturday at Pfitzner Stadium. Winston-Salem scored the game's first run in the top of the first, but Cole Freeman blasted a solo shot to left against Cristian Castillo to knot the contest at one. The Dash regained the edge in the second on an RBI single from Luis Robert through the left side to make it a 2-1 contest, but David Masters hit a two-run shot to left in the second to put Potomac up for good.
GEORGE'S SLAM LIFTS DASH IN FINALE
Jordan George smacked a go-ahead grand slam in game two on Saturday, as Winston-Salem won 5-2 in its doubleheader finale against Potomac at Pfitzner Stadium. After Luis Reyes held the Dash hitless through the first three innings. Winston-Salem set up the bases loaded for George in the fourth. Jameson Fisher led off the inning with a single, and Tyler Frost and Zach Remillard were hit by pitches in back-to-back at-bats. Following a fielder's choice groundout by Tate Blackman, George ripped a 3-2 pitch over the wall in right to give the Dash a 4-0 edge. Lincoln Henzman tossed three perfect innings in his first start back from the injured list, and Zach Lewis earned the win in relief with three innings of work.
A HOT START FOR LA PANTERA
Robert, who is ranked the 38th-best prospect in all of baseball per MLB Pipeline, was named the Carolina League Player of the Week for April 4-14, the league office announced on Monday. Robert is off to a hot start to 2019. In 15 games played, he is 28-for-59 with six homers, 18 RBIs and a batting line of .475/.530/.915. He has also already posted 11 multi-hit games this year. The 21-year-old leads the Carolina League in batting average, hits, home runs, runs, stolen bases, slugging percentage, OPS, extra-base hits and total bases. Robert was inked to a $26 million signing bonus by the White Sox in May of 2017. It was the second-largest bonus given to an amateur, behind only Yoan Moncada's deal with the Boston Red Sox.
PARKE IT LIKE IT'S HOT
Left-hander John Parke, who was third among White Sox farmhands in innings pitched (153.0) last year, gets the ball on Sunday. A 21st-round pick out of the University of South Carolina, Parke put together an impressive first full season in the professional ranks. Between Low-A Kannapolis and Winston-Salem last year, Parke was 12-8 with a 3.53 ERA in 27 starts. So far this year, Parke has not gone fewer than five innings in each of his first three outings. This past offseason, Parke had the opportunity to work out alongside big leaguers Max Scherzer and Sam Dyson in Jupiter, Florida.
YOU SAY GOODBYE, I SAY HELLO
Winston-Salem is wrapping up its four-game set at Pftizner Stadium on Sunday, marking the end of the first of three trips to Woodbridge, Va., this season. This will be the last season that the Nationals High-A affiliate will play at Pfitzner Stadium, as the club will move to Fredericksburg starting in 2020. A new state-of-the-art facility will be located at Celebrate Virginia South on Carl D. Silver Parkway near the Fredericksburg Expo & Convention Center in Fredericksburg.
YOUNGEST IN FULL-SEASON MILB
Justin Jirschele is the 48th manager in Winston-Salem's franchise history, and he is the first former Dash player to become the team's skipper. Despite celebrating his 29th birthday on Monday, Jirschele is still the youngest manager in full-season Minor League Baseball this year. He previously served as the manager of the Low-A Kannapolis Intimidators, helping the team reach the playoffs in 2017 and 2018. During his time in Winston, Jirschele was playing second base when James Dykstra threw a seven-inning no-hitter in game one of a doubleheader on April 15, 2015, at Pfitzner Stadium.
DASH DOTS
George's grand slam was the first for a Dash player since Laz Rivera hit a grand slam against the Salem Red Sox on August 30, 2018, at BB&T Ballpark.
