WOODBRIDGE, Va. - Thanks to an 11-hit effort from the Potomac offense, the Nationals earned a series split over the Dash with a 7-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Pfitzner Stadium.
With the game scoreless heading into the third, the Potomac (8-10) offense went to work against Dash starter John Parke (1-1). After Anderson Franco led off the frame with a single, Gage Canning stroked a run-scoring triple to right to put the Nationals ahead 1-0. Parke retired the next two batters, but Cole Freeman stroked an RBI single to left-center to make it a 2-0 contest.
In the fifth, the P-Nats put the game out of reach. Following a Canning single and an Armond Upshaw walk, Osvaldo Abreu stroked a run-scoring single to left to put the Nationals up by three. Later in the frame, Aldrem Corredor stroked a single that brought up two runs, and Nick Banks capped the inning with an RBI double to left.
The Dash (8-10) played their lone of the game in the sixth against Potomac right-hander Kyle Johnston (1-3), who earned the victory by tossing 5.2 innings and allowing four hits. Yeyson Yrizarri doubled to begin the frame, and, three batters later, Nick Madrigal grounded a run-scoring single to third to make it a 6-1 game.
Potomac plated its final run in the sixth, but Will Kincanon tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Winston-Salem now hits the road to Wilmington, Del., to start a three-game set against the Blue Rocks on Monday at Frawley Stadium. The Dash will send right-hander Blake Battenfield (0-2, 3.71 ERA) to the hill against Wilmington left-hander J.C. Cloney (1-1, 3.09 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m., and fans can catch all of the action on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn Radio App.
Following the Dash's seven-game road trip, the Dash return home for a seven-game homestand beginning on Friday, April 26, against the Frederick Keys. After Friday's game, there will be a postgame fireworks display. Live music and a Chick-fil-A Four Pack Night are on deck for Saturday, followed by a Lowes Foods Family Sunday during the series finale.
The homestand will roll into the following week with a four-game series against Potomac from April 29-May 2, which features a Free Food Monday and a Taco Tuesday. The homestand finale will be a Lowes Foods Thirsty Thursday, a Pups in the Park Night, presented by Handy and Handy Orthodontics, and a Rayados Day.
