Winston-Salem Clinches Series Win over Red Sox
September 1, 2016 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Thanks to a four-run eighth inning, sparked by Mason Robbins' three-run triple, the Dash clinched their series at Salem with a 7-2 victory over the playoff-bound Red Sox on Thursday night at LewisGale Field.
As a result, the Dash (28-37, 56-79) recorded a 7-4 mark in road games against the Red Sox (41-25, 84-51), who boast the Carolina League's best home record at 46-24.
Leading 3-2 through seven, Winston-Salem went to work against reliever Mario Alcantara, who did retire the first six he faced. However, the Dash led off with back-to-back singles from Dante Flores and Daniel Gonzalez. An error on a sacrifice bunt loaded the bases with nobody out.
Alcantara responded with consecutive strikeouts, and he had two strikes on Mason Robbins. However, Robbins launched a triple to dead center field, clearing the bases and pushing Winston-Salem's lead to four. Robbins went 3-for-5 to increase his league-leading average and hits total to .317 and 156, respectively.
Gerson Montilla chimed in with an RBI single, giving him a Dash-best 74 RBIs, to complete the eighth inning. All four runs in the frame were unearned.
Winston-Salem claimed the lead for good in the third and never looked back. After the Red Sox plated a run in the first, the Dash mustered a single tally in each of the next three innings. Landon Lassiter tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the second, and Toby Thomas broke the deadlock with a third-inning RBI fielder's choice. Robbins' RBI double in the fourth made it 3-1.
The duo of Zach Thompson (3-5) and Ryan Riga made sure this offense held up against a potent Salem attack. Thompson worked into the seventh inning for a second straight start, giving up just two runs on six hits en route to his first win since July 28.
Riga replaced Thompson with two down in the seventh and faced the minimum to claim his first High-A save.
The Dash's final series of the season, which comes again the Carolina Mudcats, begins Friday at 7 p.m. from Five County Stadium. Winston-Salem sends Kelvis Valerio (3-5, 4.36 ERA) to the mound against fellow right-hander Ryan Clark (1-13, 5.83 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn Radio App.
