Wednesday's Road Game Suspended in 11th Inning
September 1, 2016 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release
SALEM, Va. (Aug. 31, 2016) - Salem forced extra innings with four in the bottom of the ninth, and steady rain in the Roanoke Valley prompted the suspension of the game after 10 innings of action, with the game even at 7-7.
Thus, the Dash and Red Sox will conclude Wednesday's suspended game at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday from LewisGale Field. The top of the 11th was about to begin when the tarp was rolled onto the field. Thursday's regularly-scheduled finale will begin at 7:05 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended game (whichever option comes later).
The Red Sox trailed 7-0 through three and a half innings, but they rallied with one in the fourth, one in the sixth, one in the eighth and four in the ninth. In that final frame of regulation, Jose Sermo launched a three-run homer against Brandon Quintero before Nick Longhi and Mike Meyers strung together consecutive doubles off Yelmison Peralta to knot the contest.
Early on, it appeared that Winston-Salem would cruise past the playoff-bound Red Sox. Salem starter Michael Kopech walked the first five men he faced, missing out of the zone on 20 of his first 24 pitches. After bouncing back to retire the next two batters in a 2-0 game, Kopech made a mistake to Brett Austin on a 1-2 pitch, and he pummeled a 99 MPH fastball off the scoreboard in right-center field.
It was Austin's first career grand slam and Winston-Salem's fourth of the season, and it ended Kopech's day after just two-thirds of an inning. His season-long ERA jumped more than a full point to 2.25.
Winston-Salem starter Tanner Banks submitted another strong start against Salem. The southpaw surrendered two runs on seven hits, with the lone blemishes being a Ben Moore RBI groundout in the fourth and Jordan Betts RBI double in the sixth.
In Thursday's regularly-scheduled game, Winston-Salem sends right-hander Zach Thompson (2-5, 6.00 ERA) to the bump against Salem southpaw Trey Ball (8-5, 3.77 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on 600 AM-WSJS, wsjs.com and the TuneIn Radio App.
