Mejia Drives in Five, Knocks Keys out of Playoff Race

FREDERICK, MD -The Potomac Nationals (71-62/37-28) utilized five RBIs from Bryan Mejia and a four-run seventh to defeat the Frederick Keys 11-5 on Wednesday night at Nymeo Field. With the loss, the orange and black are eliminated from playoff contention.
With the game tied at four in the seventh, Potomac batted around against Austin Urban and Ivan Hernandez. Urban allowed the first two batters of the inning to reach on a walk and a single, while Kelvin Gutierrez laid down a sacrifice bunt to move two into scoring position. Urban (2-4) intentionally walked Drew Vettleson to set-up a potential double play as Hernandez was called on.
Mejia put the Nationals back on top with his third sac-fly of the night and Matt Page followed with an RBI single. Jake Lowery walked to reload the bases to send up Dale Carey. The Nats nine-hole batter grounded a ball to first which appeared to be the last out of the inning, but it went under the glove of Aderlin Rodriguez to score two more.
Nationals starter J.D. Martin picked up the win, tossing 7.2 innings. He allowed five runs on nine hits while throwing 116 pitches. It was Martin's (1-2) longest start with the P-Nats.
Four of the five runs allowed by the knuckleballer came in the fifth. With a runner at second, Jay Gonzalez doubled home Jomar Reyes, while the former scored on a ground out and a passed ball. Later in the inning, Rodriguez tied the game with an RBI single. DJ Stewart added the last run in the eighth with a solo homer.
An RBI single by Drew Vettleson with the bases loaded and a sac-fly by Mejia gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the first. In the third, they added two more on an error by Rodriguez and a another sac-fly.
Urban took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on four walks (one intentional in 2.1 innings).
The Keys and Nationals conclude their series on Thursday night. Right-hander Jon Keller (0-2, 3.18) faces off against Potomac righty Boone Whiting (10-3, 3.58).
