Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, DE - For the 25th time since joining the Carolina League as a charter member in 1945, Winston-Salem has qualified for postseason play. The Dash clinched the first half Southern Division crown with a 9-5 victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks Saturday night at Frawley Stadium.
The Dash (43-25-1) join the Lynchburg Hillcats as the division champions during the first half of the 2012 season. Winston-Salem boasts the best record in the CL and the third-best mark in High-A baseball.
After Wilmington (29-40) fought back from a five-run deficit, the Dash posted a pair of two-run innings to pull away for the win. Brady Shoemaker laced a two-out, two-run double in the sixth inning, a knock that proved to be the game-winner.
In the eighth, Shoemaker and Dan Black strung together consecutive run-producing doubles to give Winston-Salem some extra cushion.
The Dash's bullpen blanked the Blue Rocks over five and a third innings. In his second career High-A outing, Jake Wilson worked an inning and a third. Nick McCully followed with three hitless innings of relief, and Chris Bassitt faced the minimum in the ninth to nail down the win. Trayce Thompson squeezed the final out of the game, a Brian Fletcher fly out to right-center.
Winston-Salem jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Following back-to-back one-out walks, Black clubbed a towering home run beyond the right-field wall for his 11th long ball of the season.
The Dash added to their advantage with single tallies in the second and third. With two away and a runner at first, Carlos Sanchez plugged the right-center field gap with an RBI triple to give Winston-Salem a 4-0 advantage. Then, Mike Blanke banged an RBI single in the third for a five-run cushion.
Wilmington responded with three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Angel Franco delivered in both innings. His two-run single was the big blow in the third. Franco then tied the score with an RBI single down the line in right. However, the Blue Rocks never led in the contest.
Winston-Salem and Wilmington wrap up the regular season's first half Sunday afternoon at 1:35 for the finale of this four-game set. Jake Petricka (4-4, 5.16 ERA) will start for the Dash against fellow righty Chase Boruff (1-3, 4.38 ERA). Pre-game coverage on wsdash.com begins at 1:20.
