Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JUNE 12, 2011) - A trio of Winston-Salem home runs from Tyler Saladino, Jason Bour, and Ian Gac propelled the Dash to a 10-1 thrashing of Wilmington in the series finale on Sunday night at BB&T Ballpark. The ten-run output tied a season high that Winston set earlier this season against the Blue Rocks.
The run parade started for the Dash (29-34) with two outs in the second inning. Wilmington starter Jake Odorizzi walked Jason Bour before Luis Sierra tagged a double to right-center field, scoring Bour from first. Kyle Colligan followed suit and doubled home Sierra. After Austin Yount walked, Tyler Saladino cleared the bases with his fifth home run of the season. Winston struck for five runs, all with two outs against Odorizzi. The Rocks starter, who was acquired by the Royals in the Zack Greinke trade with the Milwaukee Brewers before the season, hadn't allowed five runs in an entire outing coming into Sunday.
The rally continued into the third inning when Nick Ciolli reached on a fielder's choice, and Bour hit a home run beyond the left field fence to put the Dash up 7-0. The home run for Bour was his first of the season.
Ian Gac hammered a home run to lead off the fifth. The long ball was his league-leading 16th homer, and put Winston up 8-0.
Justin Collop and J.R. Ballinger for the most part shut down the Blue Rocks through the first six innings. The Rocks managed five hits against the two pitchers, but stranded eight runners on base. Wilmington (32-29) got on the board in the seventh against reliever Brandon Kloess. Joey Lewis led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Whit Merrifield. Carlo Testa followed with a groundout, scoring Merrifield.
The Dash weren't finished. In the eighth, the first four hitters had base-hits and two more runs scored. Sierra, Colligan, and Yount had three straight singles against Wilmington reliever Brendan Lafferty. Saladino then drove in Sierra and Colligan with a double to left field.
After the rocky seventh inning, Kloess pitched a perfect eighth and ninth to lock down his fifth save of the season in as many opportunities. Ballinger (4-0) threw three scoreless innings to earn his fourth win in as many appearances for the Dash this year. Odorizzi (5-1) was hit with his first loss of the seaosn after three innings and a season-high seven runs (all earned) allowed.
Winston-Salem opens up series with Frederick starting Monday night at 7 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. The Dash will throw RHP Andre Rienzo (1-1, 3.11) against RHP Ryohei Tanaka (4-0, 1.82). The three-game set against the Keys is the last series at BB&T Ballpark before the end of the first half.
