Salem Red Sox News Release
Woodbridge, VA - Potomac scored single runs in four consecutive innings, and the Salem Sox went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position, as the Nationals finished off a sweep a Salem with a 5-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Pfitzner Stadium. The Red Sox set a season-high with 13 runners left on base, including multiple runners stranded in the final five frames.
Neither team scored more than a single run in any half inning, creating a line score of binary code. Salem got on board in the first for the second time in three days, as Kolbrin Vitek scampered home on a wild pitch from Potomac starter Paul Demny.
Potomac responded with single runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and six innings. In the third, Destin Hood drove in a run on an RBI groundout and an inning later, J.R. Higley smashed his second homer of the season to put Potomac up 2-1. In the fifth, the Nationals extended their lead to 3-1, as Eury Perez singled, stole second base, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch.
In the top of the sixth, Salem got a run back as Matt Spring launched a monstrous home run off the clock on top of the videoboard in left-center field. Spring's third homer of the season was still soaring when it ricocheted off the clock, nearly 40 feet in the air in deep left-center. The solo shot got the Sox back within one, but Potomac immediately responded, as Higley drove in a run with an RBI single to put the P-Nats back up 4-2.
Salem stranded the bases loaded in the fifth and two each in the sixth through ninth innings. Potomac, meanwhile, added an insurance run in the bottom of the eight with Justino Cuevas' two-out RBI single giving the Nationals a three-run cushion.
In the top of the ninth, Salem brought the tying run to the plate, but David Mailman lined out to second baseman Cutter Dykstra, who made a diving grab to end the game and complete the sweep of the Sox.
Ryan Pressly was strong through most of his outing, allowing three runs on six hits in five frames. However, he picked up his sixth loss of the season, as Demny was just a little bit better for Potomac. Demny tossed five and two-thirds of five-hit ball, allowing two runs, while striking out five and walking three.
The Salem Sox enter the final week of the first half by travelling to Kinston for a Monday doubleheader with the first game beginning at 4:30 PM. Anthony Ranaudo will start the opener against Kinston's T.J. House. Salem's game two pitcher is yet to be announced, while the Indians plan to send Clayton Cook to the bump.
