Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
LEADERS AND LEGENDS: Back in the leadoff spot in the Pelicans' order over the last handful of games, shortstop Leury Garcia is in his best offensive groove of the year. Over his last ten games, Garcia is batting .341 with an inside-the-park homer, seven runs batted in, and five runs scored. Over his last five contests, the Santiago, D.R. native is 8-for-22 (.364) with four runs batted in. Garcia, who struggled leading off in the order to start the year, is now a .244 hitter overall with a .200 mark in the top spot.
ALL-STAR STRUGGLES: With Drew Pomeranz's loss Saturday night, it's been a tough weekend for some of those named to the 2011 Carolina League All-Star Team. On Saturday evening in Frederick, fellow All-Star Bobby Bundy took the loss in a 3-2 Keys' defeat at the hands of the Lynchburg Hillcats, and one evening prior, Pelicans' All-Star Robbie Ross suffered just his second loss of the year in Kinston's series-opening 4-3 win. Closer Preston Guilmet did get his 14th save of the season on that night, another member of the All-Star team, but Myrtle Beach's Joe Wieland will look to break a tough weekend for All-Star starting pitching on Sunday. Wilmington's All-Star starter Jake Odorizzi also goes to the hill today.
ACE OF BASE: With another knock on Saturday, Pelicans' All-Star center fielder Ryan Strausborger extended his 2011 team-high on-base streak to 23 consecutive games. The Indiana State product's run began May 19 in Winston-Salem and is now the second-longest stretch in the league this year, surpassing Salem's Reynaldo Rodriguez's 21-gamer in April. Strausborger is closing in on the circuit's longest of 2011, tabulated by Kinston's Tyler Holt who had a 25-game run in May. Ryan has also hit safely in eleven straight games to pass Travis Adair for the longest Pelicans' hitting streak of 2011. Adair's streak was from April 14-23 and was stopped at single digits in Kinston before he was called up to Frisco.
