Winnipeg Sweeps Canaries

SIOUX FALLS - The Winnipeg Goldeyes handed the Sioux Falls Canaries an 8-5 defeat on Sunday afternoon and completed a three-game sweep at Sioux Falls Stadium and win their sixth straight contest.

Winnipeg remained 1 1/2 games behind the Gary SouthShore RailCats in the league's wildcard race, while the Canaries (38-55) have lost four consecutive games.

Kevin Moesquit broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run home run in the fifth inning off Kyle Ruwe, just his second of the year. The Goldeyes (52-41) added four more runs in the sixth inning on Ray Sadler's two-run home run, a wild pitch and Moesquit's run-scoring single. Moesquit finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.

The Canaries battled back in the eighth inning when Reggie Abercrombie launched a three-run home run, his fifth of the year. They put two more base runners on, but J.P. Ramirez grounded into an inning-ending double play to end the rally. Abercrombie had four RBI on the afternoon.

In the ninth, Patrick Keating retired the Birds in order for his 17th save.

Matthew Rusch (7-4) turned in a quality start for Winnipeg on his way to a victory. He threw seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out seven.

Ruwe (10-7) suffered the loss, matching a season-high eight runs allowed and 12 hits. He yielded one walk and fanned four batters.

Nick Van Stratten went 2-for-5 and stretched a hitting streak to 17 games, while Marcos Rodriguez was 3-for-4.

After an off day on Monday, the Canaries begin their final road series of the year against the Sioux City Explorers at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio KWSN 1230-AM, 98.1-FM and www.kwsn.com.
