St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (August 25, 2013) - A week that began with so much promise ended with the realization that the St. Paul Saints were officially eliminated from playoff contention. Their 6-3 loss to the Gary SouthShore Railcats on Sunday afternoon in front of 5,344 ended any hopes of making the playoffs and was their sixth straight loss.
The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Adam Frost led off the game with a walk. He moved to second on a bunt single by Dan Kaczrowski. With one out Brian Burgamy singled home Frost to get the Saints on the board.
The Railcats tied the game in the fourth when Reid Fronk led off with a single. He moved to third on a Craig Maddox single. Cristian Guerrero then hit a grounder to short, but Trevor Hairgrove's throw to second was errant and Fronk scored.
In the fifth the Railcats took the lead for good. Mike Massaro led off with a single. With two outs Maddox walked and Guerrero followed with a three-run homer, his fourth of the season, to give the Railcats a 4-1 lead.
With the Saints trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh Jeremy Mayo doubled with one out. Frost followed with a two-run homer to left, his 10th of the season to get the Saints within three.
In the bottom of the ninth the Saints nearly tied the game. Kaczrowski led off with a walk and Brandon Tripp singled him to second. A wild pitch moved the runners up. On a 3-0 pitch Burgamy drilled one to right field that glanced off the light post, just to the right of the foul pole, missing a home run by just a couple of feet. Burgamy would fly out. Joey Becker struck out and Donald Blunt grounded out to end the game.
The loss is the sixth straight for the Saints, all at home which is tied for the second most consecutive losses at home in franchise history.
The Saints have Monday off and return to action on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the first of a four game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Shaw Park. The Saints send RHP Anthony Claggett (8-5, 3.26). The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM.
