Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Sox move their winning streak to four as they shutout the Saltdogs 7-0 at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. A crowd of 1,758 saw Amarillo hold Lincoln scoreless for the second time in the series. Sox starter, Brad Wilson moved his ERA down to 2.68 during a game that lasted two hours and thirty-six minutes.
Luis Chirinos started for the Saltdogs and would allow five runs to score in the first inning. Chris Valencia led off and got on base when shortstop, Bryan Pounds overthrew first, advancing Valencia to second. A passed ball later and Chris Grossman singled to score Valencia from third. Cory Patton would single and then Kyle Nichols was walked to load the bases. Driving in two runs, the next batter, Joe Weik singled to center. Jorge Delgado reached base on a fielder's choice and error by Brian Embery at first base, trying to get the force out on Weik going to second. After a double play groundout, Trey Ford doubled in the fifth run of the inning, only two of them were earned.
The Sox would commit an error in the third but the runner was left stranded as Wilson struck out the last batter of that inning. Luis Chirinos came back in the second and struck out the side, allowed two hits in the third, but got out of the inning with his fourth strikeout. The Sox turned their second double play to end the fourth after a runner got on with a single. Amarillo made it 6-0 in the bottom of the inning with a double to right by Chris Valencia, followed by Chris Grossman's second run batted in of the game. Before scoring, Valencia had advanced to third on an errant pick-off attempt by Chirinos.
The Sox scored their final run during the sixth when Grossman reached on a fielder's choice error and then Cory Patton hit a single to score the Sox catcher. In the top of that inning, Lincoln had two in scoring position from Ian Gac's ground-rule double to left but Brad Wilson forced a grounder to leave the jam.
Stayton Thomas pitched the seventh for Lincoln, allowing two hits but no runs. Travis Parker faced three batters in the bottom of the eighth, forcing all fly-outs. For Amarillo, Andrew Romo allowed no runs on a hit while walking a batter and striking out one in the eighth. Matt Larkins struck out two in the ninth, while giving up one hit.
Brad Wilson (W, 4-2) pitched seven innings and gave up six hits with two walks and three strikeouts, while allowing no runs. Luis Chirinos (L, 3-4) allowed seven runs, three earned on ten hits with a walk and four strikeouts. The Saltdogs' defense committed five errors while the Sox made one. Offensively, Amarillo out-hit Lincoln twelve to eight.
With the win, the Sox improve to 50-43, while the Saltdogs fall to 48-45 on the season. Tuesday, the Sox will be in Fargo, North Dakota to face the Redhawks for a four-game series and then travel to Sioux Falls, South Dakota against the Canaries for three more. The seven-game road trip will finish the scheduled season for Amarillo. The Sox currently sit a half-game back in the loss column, behind the Laredo Lemurs in the South division.
