AirHogs Take Finale from Wingnuts

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (62-31) lost 8-3 to the Grand Prairie AirHogs (48-45) at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Andres Rodriguez hit a one-out, solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to snap a 3-3 tie and give the AirHogs their first lead of the game. Grand Prairie added two more runs in the eighth on Angel Flores' triple to right-center and Chad Mozingo's double down the right field line.

Palmer Karr Jr. added a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the ninth to extend the lead to 8-3.

Boomer Potts worked one and two-thirds scoreless relief innings to earn the win. Patrick Mincey pitched a shutout ninth to finish the game.

C.J. Ziegler and Brent Clevlen hit back-to-back two-out, RBI doubles in the bottom of the first inning to give Wichita an early 2-0 lead.

Ziegler blasted his 29th home run of the year in the bottom of the third to account for Wichita's final run. The home run establishes a new American Association record. Sioux Falls' Tim Pahuta currently has 28 home runs. Both Ziegler and Pahuta have eclipsed the previous league mark of 27, set by Brandon Sing of the Sioux Falls Pheasants in 2010.

Flores cut the Wingnuts' lead to 3-2 with a two-run homer to left-center in the top of the fourth.

Chris Smith started for the Wingnuts and took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on four hits in six innings. Smith walked one and struck out six.

Josh Strawn took a no-decision for the AirHogs in the start, allowing three earned runs on five hits in six and one-third. Strawn walked three and struck out three.

Lincoln Holdzkom took the loss for the Wingnuts.
