Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The league-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes took the opener of a three-game set with the Schaumburg Flyers tonight with a 7-5 win before 6,426 at Canwest Park.

Winnipeg opened the scoring off Alain Quijano in the first without the benefit of a hit. Wes Long drew a lead-off walk, moved up on a Josh Asanovich ground out, stole his league-leading 14th base and scored on a Kevin West sacrifice fly. Schaumburg came right back in the second off Ace Walker. Victor Ferrante led off with a fly ball to right that West misplayed, allowing Ferrante to go all the way to third. Craig Maddox followed with a fly ball to centre that fell in when Kurt Crowell lost it in the sun and it was 1-1.

Held to just one hit through three, the Goldeyes regained the lead for good in the fourth. Juan Diaz hit a lead-off double and went to third on a single by Northern League Player of the Week Dee Brown, extending his league-leading hit streak to 20 games. Crowell followed with a single to score Diaz and send Brown to third, from where he scored on the back end of a double steal after Crowell stole second. It became 4-1 in the fifth. Asanovich drew a one-out walk, Diaz singled with two out and Cody Ehlers walked to load the bases for Brown, whose second hit of the night scored Asanovich.

While Walker kept the visitors at Bay, the hosts added to their lead with three in the seventh off Kris Jiggits. West doubled to lead it off and went to third after tagging up on a Diaz fly to right. Ehlers singled and went to second when Vince Harrison threw wild to get West at home. Brown walked and, with two out, Adam Frost doubled to make it 7-1. Those runs would come in very handy.

With Aaron Odom in for Walker, Travis Ezi walked to start the eighth but was erased when Travis Brown hit into a fielder's choice for the first out. Harrison walked, Felix Jose struck out and Ferrante walked to load the bases for Maddox, who hit an absolute bomb to centre to clear the bases for his second home run of the year. But that was as close as it would get.

Walker (5-1) was the winner, allowing just one unearned run on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in seven innings. Quijano (1-1) took the loss after getting touched for four runs on seven hits and four walks with two strikeouts in five innings. Davis picked up his league-leading 11th save after tossing a perfect ninth.
