Schaumburg Flyers News Release

WINNIPEG - Defensive miscues plagued both teams Monday night at CanWest Park as the Winnipeg Goldeyes held on at home to win 7-5 over the Schaumburg Flyers. The Flyers rallied in the eighth inning behind Craig Maddox's grand slam, his second homer in as many games, but the 7-1 deficit was too much to overcome and the Flyers have now dropped five straight.

The Goldeyes jumped on the board with a manufactured run in the first, as Wes Long walked, stole third base and scored on a Kevin West sacrifice fly. Schaumburg evened the score when West dropped Victor Ferrante's fly ball in deep right field. Ferrante then scored on the next play when center fielder Kurt Crowell lost a Maddox fly ball in the sun.

Winnipeg expanded their lead with two runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth to make the score 4-1. Flyers starter Alain Quijano (1-1) exited the game after the fifth and turned it over the bullpen.

Kris Jiggits came on in relief of Quijano and escaped in the sixth with no runs given up, but was tagged for three runs in the seventh, capped by what turned out to be the game-winning two-RBI double by Adam Frost. Schaumburg committed two errors while Jiggits was on the mound, and allowed numerous pop-ups in foul territory to drop in for foul balls instead of outs.

Ace Walker (5-1) was brilliant for the Goldeyes, scattering four hits through his 7.0 innings of work, all while allowing only one unearned run. He exited in favor of lefty Aaron Odum, who walked the bases loaded before surrendering the highlight of the night for the Flyers, Maddox's grand slam. It wouldn't be enough, as Winnipeg closer Matt Davis came on in the ninth to squash the rally, working a perfect frame to record his league-leading 11th save of the season.

The first meeting between these two teams this season was witnessed by 6,426 fans, and Winnipeg increased their league lead in the standings to 6.5 games over idle Fargo-Moorhead. RHP Ed Almonte (3-3, 3.53) gets the nod tomorrow for Schaumburg, opposed by RHP Andrew Cruse (2-3, 6.00)
