Northern League Player and Pitcher of the Week Announced

Outfielder Dee Brown of the Winnipeg Goldeyes was named Northern League Player of the Week, and Kansas City T-Bones pitcher Ryan Knippschild received the Northern League Pitcher of the Week honors for the period ending June 28th , 2009.

Brown, who is riding a league-high 19-game hitting streak, batted .500 (10-for-20) with four runs scored, three home runs, and 10 RBI in the week. He has collected a hit in every game played dating back to June 3rd , including three hits apiece in the June 22nd

and June 25th games this week. During his current hitting streak, he has raised his average nearly 100 points, from .279 to .372. On the year, he leads the league in batting (.372), and is tied for third in the league in RBI (31) and hits (51).

Now residing in Winter Park, FL, the four-year veteran has started 35 of 37 games for the Goldeyes. He was signed by the Goldeyes as a free agent on April 7, 2009 after having spent the previous four seasons in the Washington Nationals minor league system.

The 6-1, 240-pounder, was originally drafted by the Nationals in the 10th round of the 2005 Amateur Draft. Arguably his best season came last year with Potomac (Carolina League) where he batted .296 with 20 doubles, eight home runs and 64 RBI in only 100 games played. He played collegiately at the University of Central Florida (Orlando, FL). In three seasons with the Golden Knights, he batted .359 with 195 RBI in only 185 games played.

Knippschild, who made his only start of the week on June 28th , earned his second victory of the year hurling seven strong innings as the T-Bones knocked off the Schaumburg Flyers. He yielded only one earned run on seven hits while striking out six and walking none. On the season, he is 2-1 with a 3.07 ERA after seven games started. He is currently tied for third in the league in ERA.

A native of Lawrence, KS and an alumnus of the Kansas Jayhawks baseball program, the left-hander returned home signing with the T-Bones on April 9th . His previous five professional seasons were played in the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers farm systems, as well as last year with the Long Island Ducks (Atlantic League). Entering the '09 season, he had a 20-20 record with a 4.42 career ERA. On May 18th , he made his first start in three-plus seasons, dating back to September 5th , 2005.

Knippschild was originally drafted by the Indians in the 35th round of the 2004 Amateur Draft. He pitched as high as Class AA twice in his career, pitching for Akron (Eastern League) in 2005 and Frisco (Texas League) in 2007. He was drafted following his senior year at the University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS) after making a combined 30 starts his last two seasons with the Jayhawks.
