Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

SALISBURY, MD - The Lakewood BlueClaws win streak is over at five as the fell to the Delmarva Shorebirds 2-1 on Tuesday. The BlueClaws (11-7) were able to score with their first swing of the bat, but they could not muster much after that as the Shorebirds (10-6) pitchers kept the BlueClaws bats at bay. The loss takes the BlueClaws out of first place by themselves in the Northern Division.

The BlueClaws got out ahead of the Shorebirds early in the game as Harold Garcia led the game off with a home run, his first of the season. Garcia had missed the past few games after getting injured in the final game of the BlueClaws homestand last week. Garcia and D'Arby Myers have both homered in their first game back from a short stint on the injured list.

However, as has been the case many times this season, the BlueClaws have not been able to hold on to a first-inning lead as BlueClaws starter Rob Roth put the leadoff batter, Kyle Husdon on with a walk, allowed him to steal second and he later scored on a groundout by Ron Welty to tie the game at one.

The Shorebirds added to their lead in the fourth inning as Joe Mahoney led the inning off with a double and scored later in the inning from third on a ground ball in the infield.

Outside of the leadoff homerun, the BlueClaws didn't threaten until the eighth inning when Garcia was hit by a pitch and Gose doubled but the inning ended on a Travis d'Arnaud groundout.

The bats went silent on Tuesday as Shorebirds starter Richard Zagone (2-1) mirrored his last start against the BlueClaws going six innings, striking out seven and allowing just one run. He was relieved in the seventh by Brent Allar who went a clean inning before running into trouble in the eighth inning. In the eighth, the Shorebirds called upon Brandon Cooney with two on and two out and he finished the inning strong. Cooney then slammed the door on the BlueClaws as he picked up his fourth save of the season.

BlueClaws starter Rob Roth (1-1), in his fourth start of the season, lasted 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and two runs as he was hit with a ball that was batted back at him. He could not continue any further and Justin De Fratus came on in the fourth to relieve the injured Roth. De Fratus then pitched 4.2 scoreless innings, striking out five as he kept his team in the game.

The BlueClaws and the Shorebirds will finish their series on Wednesday in a late morning contest at 10:35 am. The BlueClaws will send Jesus Sanchez (1- 1) to the mound, after making back-to-back good starts, and he will be opposed by lefty Cole McCurry (0- 0). McCurry shutout the BlueClaws in four innings in his first start of the season.
