Grasshoppers score early and often to defeat Power

Greensboro, NC (April 28, 2009) - The Greensboro Grasshoppers scored all eight of their runs over the first five innings of Tuesday night's game against the West Virginia Power and came away with their first victory of the series, topping the Power 8-3 at NewBridge Bank Park.

The Power took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Robbie Grossman wasted no time extending his on base streak to ten games with a lead off double. Austin McClune bunted him over to third base and he scored on Chase D'Arnaud's groundout. Kevin Mattison tied the game in the bottom of the first with a solo homerun and Paul Gran's double plated Danny Pertusati to give the ‘Hoppers the lead. Isaac Galloway's two-bagger plated Greensboro's first run of the second inning and Galloway scored later in the frame on Pertusati's second single of the contest.

Ben Lasater added to the lead with a solo homer in the third inning. It was his third homer of the series and his fifth of the season. The Grasshoppers plated two more in the fourth inning on run scoring singles from Mattison and Lasater. The Power plated their final two runs in the fifth. Adenson Chourio reached on an error committed by Lasater, which allowed Erik Huber to score. Chourio scored later in the inning on McClune's two-out single. Joel Staples drove in the game's final run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

Kyle Kaminska (2-1) allowed just three runs, only one earned on four hits and fanned five over five innings to get the victory. Gabriel Alvarado (1-2) was roughed up over three and two-thirds, allowing seven runs on nine hits in a losing effort. Kyle McPherson tossed three scoreless innings of no-hit relief for the Power and retired eight batters in a row.

West Virginia fell to 6-13 with the loss and the Grasshoppers improved to 10-9 after the victory. Chase D'Arnaud went 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to seven games and his on base streak to 13 games. Robbie Grossman reached multiple times for the fourth game in a row.

West Virginia will finish the four game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers at Newbridge Bank Park on Wednesday morning. Right hander Jose Rosario (1-0, 6.00) will start for Greensboro and the Power will counter with right hander Maurice Bankston (0-2, 5.52). The first pitch is scheduled for 10:45 AM.
