Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Lake County Captains (8-10) got on the board first for the second straight night at Municipal Stadium, pushing home three runs in the top of the first inning and holding on for a 5-3 win over the Hagerstown Suns (5-11).
The Suns have allowed their opponents to score first in 14 of 16 games to start the season, and this time it was Lake County designated hitter Nate Recknagel who did the honors. With two outs and a runner on third in the opening inning, Recknagle singled for his first of two hits on the evening, making the score 1-0. Jeremie Tice was next to the plate, and blasted a towering homerun over the centerfield wall to drive in Recknagel and put the Captains on top by three.
After Recknagle homered to left in the fourth for a 4-0 Lake County lead, the Suns came through with a pair of two-out RBIs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the Captains' lead in half. Designated hitter Sandy Leon drove home left fielder Robbie Jacobsen with a double in the fourth, and in the very next inning third baseman Steven Souza singled in second baseman Steve Lombardozzi, who had doubled.
Hagerstown pulled to within one in the bottom of the seventh when first baseman Ronnie LaBrie dropped an RBI single in front of the Lake County right fielder, but LaBrie was caught trying to steal second during the next at-bat, taking the life out of the Suns' rally. Lake County added a final insurance run in the top of the ninth, and Captains' reliever Matthew Langwell shut down Hagerstown in the bottom of the inning, sending the Suns to their sixth straight loss.
Lake County's Alexander Perez (1-0) allowed just two runs in four and two-thirds innings to pick up the win for the Captains, while Hagerstown starter Brad Peacock (0-1) took his first loss after surrendering seven hits and a pair of round-trippers.
The third and final game of the series against Lake County will be the first Education Day of 2009 at Municipal Stadium, with gates opening at 9:05 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29 in anticipation of a 10:35 a.m. start.
