
Errors Seal Tourists Comeback Win

CHARLESTON, SC - Two RiverDogs throwing errors in the bottom of the ninth sealed the 7-6 comeback victory for the Asheville Tourists in South Atlantic League action Tuesday in front of 1,332 fans at Asheville's McCormick Field.
Behind by two runs in the ninth the Asheville Tourists were down to their final out when Carlos Martinez and Scott Robinson hit back-to-back singles. Tourists Manager Joe Mikulik signaled for a double steal that resulted in two runs as RiverDogs catcher Mitch Abeita's throw sailed into the outfield that plated Martinez and then a throwing error by center fielder Ray Kruml allowed Robinson to score from first for the game-winning run.
This was closer Pat Venditte's (1-1) first blown save as a professional, since 2008 he had converted 28 consecutive save opportunities.
With the victory, the Tourists win the first game of the series and improve to 8-11 overall while the RiverDogs slip to 11-8.
Asheville jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when James Cesario mashed a leadoff solo blast over the center field fence.
The RiverDogs responded to take a 2-1 advantage in the top of the fourth when David Adams cracked a two-out single that lead to Brian Baisley's a two-run home run over the left field wall.
The Tourists recaptured a 3-2 lead in the home half of the fourth frame after Keil Roling reached on a fielding error by Carmen Angelini to lead off the inning. Cesario followed with a single to left that advanced Roling to second. Erik Wetzel dropped a sacrifice bunt that moved Roling and Cesario into scoring position. Joseph Massey tied the game two when he knocked in Roling on a ground out while Ryan Peisel followed with a single that plated Cesario for the inning's second run.
Asheville tacked an addition run in the fifth that increased the lead to 4-2 when Robinson singled to lead off the inning only to scamper into third after Charleston starter David Phelps' throwing error on a pickoff attempt. Delta Cleary then lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Robinson.
Charleston cut into Asheville's advantage that brought the game to 4-3 in the seventh when Angelini drew a two-out walk and then dashed to second after a wild pitch. Kruml slapped an RBI-double to center field that scored Angelini.
The Tourists reclaimed a 5-3 advantage in the bottom of the seventh when Peisel doubled to lead off the inning only to circle home after Cleary slapped a two-out singled up the middle.
Charleston claimed its second lead of the ballgame when the RiverDogs took a 6-5 advantage in the top of the ninth inning when Abeita lead the inning off with a solo home run over the left field fence. Kruml added an infield single only to advance to second after a wild pitch. Adams followed with a walk and then another wild pitch put both runners in scoring position before Brian Baisley knocked a two-run double to left field.
Despite blowing a save situation, Asheville reliever Adam Jorgenson (1-1) received the win after he allowed three runs off of three hits in the the ninth
Charleston amassed 11 hits on the game lead by left fielder Dan Brewer with three while Asheville also tallied 11 base knocks, four players accounted for two hits apiece.
The RiverDogs continue their four-game series against the Asheville Tourists Wednesday morning with an 11:05 AM start. Charleston manager Torre Tyson has announced that righty Brett Marshall (0-2, 6.32 ERA) will get the mound start while Asheville counters with righty Parker Frazier (0-2, 6.06 ERA).
