Modesto Nuts News Release
MODESTO, CA (June 15th, 2013) -- Nuts ace Dan Winkler capped off an impressive first-half on the mound with a stellar performance to lead Modesto to a 6-4 win over the Blaze on Saturday night at John Thurman Field.
Winkler (9-2) took held the Blaze without a hit until Juan Silva doubled with one out in the seventh inning. The Cal League All-Star finished the rest of the frame with a shutout intact, striking out eighth and allowing just two other base runners on a walk and hit batter. With the win, he now leads the league in wins, ERA, opponent's average, WHIP, and strikeouts.
Modesto jumped out to an early 6-0 lead on Blaze starter Mike Dennhardt (3-6), who would eventually take the loss. Jared Simon got the Nuts on the board with an RBI double in the second, and Will Swanner made it 2-0 with a sac-fly. Modesto then loaded the bases with no outs in the 3rd, and Ryan Casteel pummeled the first pitch off the left-field fence to clear the bases with a 3-run double.
Dennhardt would settle down from there, keeping the Nuts off the board the rest of the way.
Bakersfield got their offense going late against the Nuts bullpen, scoring four runs against reliever Nelson Gonzalez. Juan Perez had an RBI single, then a 2-run double by Yorman Rodriguez, and the inning was capped off by a run-scoring single by Juan Silva.
The Blaze made things interesting in the ninth against Nuts closer Scott Oberg, getting two in scoring position, the the righty struck out the side to pick up his 15th save of the year. He is tied for the league lead with Visalia's Jake Barrett.
