Modesto Nuts News Release

MODESTO, CA (June 16th, 2013) -- The Nuts wrapped up a rough first half to the 2013 season with a 12-3 loss to the Blaze on Sunday afternoon at John Thurman Field.

With the defeat, Modesto finished the half with a record of 32-28, good for fourth place in the North Division.

Bakersfield (29-41) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back en route to victory. Juan Silverio had a monster game for the Blaze, going 3-for-5 with two home runs and six RBI's.

After an error by Jared Simon in the top of the first, Silverio blasted a 2-run homer off of Tyler Gagnon to get the Blaze on the board. Modesto got one run back with a double from David Kandilas and an RBI single from Taylor Featherston against Blaze starter Carlos Contreras.

Gagnon ran into trouble in the second, giving up a pair of two-out runs to make it 4-1 Bakersfield. Gagnon (5-5) would settle down and got Modesto through six innings, but took the loss as the Nuts never recovered.

Kandilas homered in the fifth against reliever Carlos Gonzalez to get Modesto back within two, but the Blaze outscored Modesto 8-to-1 over the final four innings.

Reliever Nick Schnaitmann came on in the seventh and struggled, giving up three walks and a single to make it 5-2. Russell Brewer came on with no outs in the inning, and gave up a grand slam to Silverio as the Blaze blew the game open. Bakersfield added three runs in the ninth against Geoff Parker, totaling 12 runs on 13 hits in the contest. It was the most runs given up by Modesto this season.

The Nuts got their final run in the eighth as Brian Humphries singled against Jimmy Moran, and eventually scored on a sac-fly by Ryan Casteel.

Gonzalez (2-0) gave up just the home run to Kandilas in three innings of relief to pick up the win.

Following a three-day All-Star Break, the Nuts will return to John Thurman Field on Thursday to open up the second-half of the season against Visalia. First pitch to open the four-game series is set for 7:05 p.m.
