Rochester Red Wings News Release

The Red Wings won both games against the Columbus Clippers, in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Frontier Field, taking 3-2 and 4-1 decisions. Jason Tyner had a pair of hits, a run scored and a run batted in for Rochester in the first game; J.D. Durbin continued his streak of outstanding starts, and Shawn Wooten and Garrett Jones each had two hits in the second game. .

In the opener, the Wings staked starter Kyle Lohse to an early lead with a pair in the first off Columbus starter Jorge DePaula (0-2). Tyner led off with a double, and scored on Jason Bartlett's league-leading 22nd double. Bartlett scored the second run on a Kevin West RBI sacrifice fly to right.

In the fourth inning, Lohse (2-1) ran into trouble on his second time through the Clippers lineup. Carlos Pena's RBI sacrifice fly put Columbus on the board and made it a 2-1 game; but with the bases loaded and just one out, Lohse got a groundout and a fly out to end the threat.

In the bottom of the fourth Gil Velazquez singled and Andres Torres had a two-out walk to put two runners on for Tyner. Tyner singled past Pena to drive in Velazquez with the third Red Wings run.

Columbus put their first two batters of the sixth inning on base, prompting Manager Stan Cliburn to call for closer Pat Neshek. Jason Conti attempted an sacrifice bunt, but Neshek pounced on the ball and fired a strike to third base for a force out. Mitch Jones sliced an opposite field, ground-rule double that bounced over the right field wall, scoring a run to make it 3-2 Wings. With runners at second and third and the infield in, Neshek struck out Caonabo Cosme then walked Nick Green after a 10-pitch at-bat. Kevin Reese chopped a ball up the middle that glanced off Neshek's glove and right to second baseman Velazquez, who stepped on second for a force out that ended the inning. In the seventh, after retiring the first two batters with a strikeout and grounder to first, Neshek allowed a single to Andy Cannizaro, but that was it for the Clippers as Russ Johnson grounded out to Ve! lazquez to end the game. Neshek earned his 11th save.

Rochester' starter in the second game was Durbin, who retired the first two batters before giving up back to back walks. Velazquez made a great diving stop and flipped the ball to second basemen Luis Maza to end the early threat.

Durbin settled down to retire the next seven batters. Maza made a great defensive play in the top of the third, diving to his right and throwing out Kevin Reese at first.

After going 1-2-3 against Ramiro Mendoza in the first two innings, the Wings started their offense in the bottom of the third. Maza and Glenn Williams hit back to back singles as Torres put down a sacrafice bunt to advance the runners. The next batter, Tyner, hit a deep fly ball to center scoring Maza, but Williams was thrown out as he tried to advance to third.

With runners on first and second with none out in the fourth, Durbin struck out the next three batters to end the inning.

The Wings added three runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Wooten hit a double to right field and West scored when catcher Jason Brown dropped the ball at home plate. Wooten advanced to third on the throw and Jones drove him in with a double. Williams scored after the third basemen made a throwing error that skipped past first.

Durbin (4-1), who came into the game with just a 1-1 record and 4.10 ERA at Frontier compared to 2-0, 1.19 ERA on the road, also brought a 15-inning scoreless streak and had not allowed a run in his past two starts. He extended his scoreless streak to 21 2/3 innings after working 6 2/3 innings Sunday. The Clippers plated a seventh inning run off Durbin on Reese's double; Durbin exited at that point, having allowed four hits and five walks with six strikeouts. Ricky Barrett came into the game to face Pena, and got a strikeout to end the game and earn his first save of the season.
