TONIGHT'S GAME: The fourth of a four game series and the fourth of eight meetings with the SkyChiefs, the fourth of four at The Diamond. The Braves are 2-1 vs. Syracuse. Game eight of an eight game homestand (Richmond is 3-4). The Braves were 2-6 vs. the SkyChiefs last season, 0-4 at The Diamond. This is the 24th of 48 games vs. North Division opponents, Richmond is 9-14 vs. the North. The 16th of 24 home games vs. North Division opponents (Richmond is 8-7). Braves are 337-304 vs. the SkyChiefs all-time. The Braves are third in the South, 15.5 and a half games behind first place Charlotte. The SkyChiefs are sixth in the North, nine and a half games out of first.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The SkyChiefs beat the Braves 4-3 Saturday at The Diamond. The Chiefs bounced back after Richmond erased an early 3-0 deficit to beat the Braves for the first time in three tries this season. Syracuse took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Chad Mottola. The Chiefs bumped their lead to 3-0 in the third when Sergio Santos chased a run home with a double and Mottola knocked in another run with a ground out. The Braves bounced back with two runs in the third; Martin Prado singled a run in and Scott Thorman drilled a home run. Thorman homered again in the fifth to tie the game at three. Syracuse went ahead to stay in the sixth on an RBI double by Rob Cosby. Syracuse pitchers Josh Towers and Vinnie Chulk held the Braves hitless over the final 4.1 innings. Towers picked up the win and Chulk earned a save. Jonathan Johnson took the loss. Thorman and Prado had two hits each for the Braves. Mottola had two hits for the SkyChiefs.
STREAKERS: Cesar Crespo has an eight game hitting streak (10-26 .385). Bill McCarthy has hits in seven straight games (11-25 .440). Scott Thorman has hits in five straight games (7-20 .350). Thorman enjoyed his second two home run game of the season yesterday. Michael Ryan has hits in four straight games (5-15 .333). Martin Prado has hits in four straight games (6-16 .375). Carlos Mendez has hits in three straight games (5-11.454). Tony Pena has hits in four straight games (4-12 .333). James Jurries has hits in three straight games (3-12 .250). RHP Phil Stockman has worked his last 13 innings without allowing a run and permitting just two hits. He has not allowed a run over 10 innings in five appearances on the road. All three runs allowed by Stockman came in one appearance. He did not allow a run in 7.2 Double-A innings before coming to Richmond. RHP Kevin Barry continues to dominate as a starting pitcher. Barry has not allowed a run in his last four starts over 25 innings. The only earned run he has allowed in his last 35 innings came in an extended relief stint May 24.
LEADING MEN: Kevin Barry is fifth in the IL in ERA and tied for fourth in strikeouts. Wes Timmons is fourth in batting average (.316). He leads the league in on base percentage (.428). Timmons is currently on the DL and has been out of the lineup since May 16 due to a fractured thumb. Scott Thorman is tied for second in the league in home runs (11). He is third in hits with 60. The Braves are second in the IL in stolen base percentage. They have swiped 46 and have been caught 13 times (77.9%). Their 13 caught stealings is the fewest in the IL. Charlotte leads the league at 79.3%. The Braves pitching staff is fourth in the IL in strikeouts.
YOU'RE IN GOOD HANDS: The Braves are tied for second in the IL in fielding percentage. They are tied for second in total chances. The Braves are on a pace to break the franchise record for fewest errors in a season (97 in 2004). Richmond has played four straight errorless games. The Braves have started at least three players at every position except second base. Brayan Pena (now with Atlanta) leads IL catchers in fielding percentage (1.000 in 31 games).
