Wheeling Nailers News Release
Wheeling, WV- A late power play goal from Kevin Schmidt broke a shutout bid for Kalamazoo's Ryan Nie as the Nailers fell to the Wings 4-1 Sunday afternoon at WesBanco Arena.
Wheeling blasted away for 41 shots on goal in the game but Nie turned aside the first 40 in a row he faced to frustrate the Nailers' attack all evening. The win for Kalamazoo avenges a 10-1 setback they suffered in their last visit to Wheeling on February 6th. The game was the first of five between the Nailers and the K-Wings over the next could of weeks including four straight throughout this week.
The Nailers drop to 29-29-6 with 64 points and remain 10th in the American Conference, only two points behind the 8th place Reading Royals. The top 8 qualify for Kelly Cup Playoffs in April.
The Nailers carried the play in the first period outshooting the Wings 17-6 but trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.
The Wings found themselves on an odd man rush and Darryl Lloyd fired it over the glove side shoulder of Adam Berkhoel from the left wing midway through the first period.
A couple of Kalamazoo goals set the Nailers back 3 goals after a frustrating second period.
Early in the second Kalamazoo added to their 1-0 lead when forward Trent Daavettila snatched the puck, raced up ice shorthanded and stuffed in a backhander past Berkhoel.
Sam Ftorek stretched the Kalamazoo lead to 3-0 as he blasted one in from the right point at 10:58 in the second.
The Wings pulled away in the third, but the Nailers managed to break the shutout.
Brian McGuirk picked up a rebound and fired it in after Berkhoel made a nice left leg pad save that put the Wings up 4-0 at 7:41 in the third.
Kevin Schmidt got the lone goal for the Nailers with 1:22 left in regulation. A long drive from the center point by hit off the stick of Ryan Nie and found its way in the net for a final score of 4-1.
The Nailers and Wings play four more times this season. Wheeling travels to Kalamazoo for a couple of games on Wednesday March 17th beginning at 7:00pm and again Friday March 19th starting at 7:30pm.
The Nailers return to Wheeling and host the Wings Saturday March 20th and Sunday March 21st. Saturday is the Affiliation Night celebrating the Penguins organization. Wheeling will wear the Baby Blue Penguins replica jerseys for the last time to be auctioned on eBay. Sunday is Pups and Pucks. Bring your dog to the game and cheer on the Nailers with man's best friend!
