Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

In what has become a familiar sight this season, the Sioux Falls Pheasants had to take on the elements as well as the opposing team.

Neither were kind to the Pheasants in this game.

The Wichita Wingnuts took an early lead and never looked back, defeating the Pheasants 9-0 in five innings Thursday to avoid the series sweep in the third rain-shortened game of the season at Sioux Falls Stadium.

With aces Nick Singleton and Ben Moore on the mound, the game figured to be a low-scoring affair. But the Pheasants' starter struggled with control throughout the night, walking six batters through five innings of work.

While Moore stumbled, his counterpart Singleton (7-0) was sharp, allowing just one hit through five innings to collect his league-leading seventh inning.

Wichita got to Moore (4-1) early, scoring seven runs in the first three innings. Juan Richardson drove in three runs and Ryan Patterson added an RBI double to lead the charge.

The Pheasants loaded the bases in the third when Singleton plunked Kevin Carby, his third hit-batsmen of the inning. But the right-hander induced Reggie Abercrombie to pop up to second baseman Thomas Fitzgerald to get out of the jam.

Pheasants reliever Ben Rosen walked Josh Workman to score Patterson before the umpires suspended the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in the top of the sixth. Workman reached base in all four plate appearances, including two doubles.

The game was called after a 30-minute rain delay.

Mark Shorey had the only hit for Sioux Falls, a one-out double in the fourth.

The Pheasants look to rebound against division-rival Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in a weekend series starting at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, June 10 at Sioux Falls Stadium. It's a Fantastic Friday Night Fireworks. A postgame fireworks show will be on display, sponsored by Sanford Health.
