Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, Pa. - The Washington Wild Things (38-46), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, lost the series finale against the Windy City Thunderbolts (49-35) 8-1, completing the unusual four-game sweep Sunday night at CONSOL Energy Park.

The Wild Things' offense struggled to get anything started against ThunderBolts' starter Dustin Pease. In the win, Pease (10-6) gave up one run on just four hits in seven innings of work. Despite walking five and hitting another, he fooled hitters all night, getting them to hit into easy outs.

The scoring got started early, when Windy City got a one-out triple by Robert Perry who scored a hitter later to make it 1-0. The team would add a second run in the third before breaking the game open in the fourth. Kraig Binick started the inning off with a walk and scored on Vinnie Scarduzio's 16th homerun of the season to make it 4-0. For the night, Perry led all batters going 3-3 with a walk, a hit by pitch and a stolen base.

It took the Wild Things until the fourth to get their first hit, and it was not until the seventh that the team's only run crossed the plate. With one out in the inning, Brett Grandstrand tripled to the 410 sign in centerfield and later scored on Kyle Obal's sacrifice groundout. Matt Sutton broke up the no-hit bid for Pease with his single in the fourth.

Going on a short three-day rest instead of the usual four-day rest, starter Zach Groh did not look himself for the Wild Things. In the loss, Groh (5-4) lasted three and a third innings, giving up five runs on five hits while striking out only one, an unusual sight for the team leader in strikeouts. To his credit, the defense had an off night, as well, committing three errors for the second consecutive game.

The Wild Things will look to re-group with an off day Monday, hitting the road to take on the Lake Erie Crushers for a three-game series beginning Tuesday. First pitch Tuesday is set for 7:05 p.m. Broadcast on WJPA 95.3 FM begins at 6:55.
