Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners extended their winning streak to seven games, with a 7-1 victory over the Midwest Sliders Sunday evening at Rent One Park. The infamous "Leroy the Rally Skunk" was not needed as Miners starter Ryan Bird dominated the Midwest line-up to win his second straight start. The win broke a streak of four consecutive days of walk-off wins for the Miners.
Bird allowed just one run through 7.1 innings of work, improving his record to 9-5 on the season. Midwest managed just four hits against Bird. He struck out a season high nine batters. It was the ninth time in his Miners career that he registered nine or more strikeouts. The nine strikeouts also tied teammate Joe Augustine for the most by a Miner this season.
The Miners broke a scoreless tie in the second inning. Brad Netzel put the Miners up 1-0 with an RBI single that scored Stephen Holdren. Two batters later, Will block's sacrifice fly scored Andrew Sweet, making it a 2-0 contest. The Miners blew the game wide open in the eighth inning. Southern Illinois led 4-1 when Brad Miller scored from third base on a wild pitch by Sliders reliever Earl Oakes. Later in the inning, Stephen Holdren blasted his second home run as a Miner. It was his 19th overall this season and extended the lead to 7-1.
The win marked the first time in franchise history that Southern Illinois went 6-0 on a six-game homestand. The Miners have now swept four series this season, all four of them at home.
After an off-day Monday, Southern Illinois will play Tuesday night in Evansville against the Otters. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT. The Miners will send Joe Augustine (6-4, 3.09) to the hill, looking to tie a franchise record by extending the win streak to eight games. Evansville has not announced a scheduled starter for Tuesday's game. The Miners next game is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 1 against Windy City.
