Maddox's Homer In The 11th Sends Rascals To 7-6 Victory

O'FALLON, MO - Chad Maddox launched a B.J. Hagen pitch over the wall in left centerfield to send the Rascals to a 7-6 walk-off win in 11 innings over the Beach Bums Sunday night in front of 2,730 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. The home run ended a 22.2 innings scoreless streak for Hagen, who was scored upon for the first time in the second half.

River City (47-36) recovered for the victory after surrendering a 6-2 lead. The Rascals plated five in the fifth off David Dinelli, who lasted only 1.2 innings. Chris Colton led off with his 15th home run to tie the game at two. Danny Sawyer and Josh Banda both singled and Scott Houin walked to load the bases for JoJo Batten. The second baseman plugged the gap in left to field to plate all three runs and give the Rascals a 5-2 cushion. Maddox followed with a single for the Rascals final run until the bottom of the 11th.

Traverse City (38-46) blasted a couple of solo home runs in the first to take an early 2-0 advantage. Mike Epping hit the first pitch of the game from Jake Laber over the right field wall for his eighth home run. John Alonso went into the Rascals' bullpen in right center for his 13th long ball.

Laber would surrender four more runs before departing after five frames to earn his fifth straight no-decision. Alonso, Mike Victor and Brian Lapin all slapped consecutive singles to start the fourth, with Victor scoring on the Lapin base hit. Brad Miller doubled to start off the fifth and Michael Campbell singled him home to make it 6-4. Alonso tied it up on his second home run of the night, a two run shot over the wall in right center.

Laber allowed six runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts and two walks in his five innings of work while Dinelli gave up six runs on six hits over 1.2 innings.

Both the bullpens shut down the opposing lineups with the Rascals pen combining for six frames of scoreless ball, allowing only three hits with five strikeouts. The Beach Bums pen went 8.2 innings allowing only the walk-off home run on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Jason Lowey (3-1) worked the final two frames for his third win, striking out four while allowing only two hits.

Hagen (0-2) took the loss despite going 3.1innings and giving up one run on one hit while recording four strikeouts.

Maddox finished 4-6 with the home run and two knocked in. Sawyer and Banda each had two hits while Batten drove in a team high three runs.

The Rascals finished the home stand 4-2 and remain a game and a half behind Windy City and a full game back of Southern Illinois for the fourth and final playoff spot. The team is off tomorrow before traveling north to Rockford for three games. Stephen Flake (3-4) will go against Kyle Wright (10-3) on Tuesday night. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
