Win the Jersey off a Winterhawks Player's Back
February 1, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland Winterhawks players will give lucky fans the jerseys right off their backs following the team's season finale on Sunday, March 20 against the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Moda Center.
The team is hosting the third annual "Jerseys off their Backs for Education" sponsored by The Oregon College Savings Plan. Every season, a one-of-a kind special jersey is worn by the players for this event, and following the game, lucky fans head onto the ice to receive the jersey directly from the player after the game.
Since its inception, "Jerseys of their Backs for Education" has raised more than $60,000 for the player education fund to assist Winterhawks players who pursue post-secondary education after their playing careers in the WHL are over.
"Having a player hand over their jersey right after the game is a unique opportunity very few fans get to experience," said Portland Winterhawks President Doug Piper. "Not only is it a great way to win a unique team-used jersey, but helps the players who don't go on to professional hockey get started on another career path."
"Not every player will go on to have a career in the NHL, but thanks to the Winterhawks' Players Education Fund, those players will still have an opportunity to go on to college and get a higher education. We love that idea and support it 100%," said Michael Parker, Executive Director of The Oregon College Savings Plan. "We value education on all levels and want to inspire families to imagine the possibilities for their kids when it comes to going to college. We applaud the Winterhawks for reinforcing the message that it is never too early to start saving for that college education."
Fans interested in winning a spot on the ice to receive a player's jersey can purchase raffle tickets at all Winterhawks home games, the team's ticket office at Veterans Memorial Coliseum or online at http://www.winterhawks.com/page/jerseyraffle. Winners will be contacted in the week leading up to the game.
Group tickets include free Winterhawks hats starting at only $18 each while ticket plans begin at $90 each and include free Winterhawks scarves. Email seats@winterhawks.com or call 503-236-HAWK to buy seats today.
