Wilson Tobs News Release


COLUMBIA, S.C.- The Wilson Tobs defeated the Columbia Blowfish by a score of 14-8 at Capital City Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina on Monday. The Tobs had two innings when they sent nine batters to the plate and scored five or more runs, Ryan Daughtry had four hits in the game and the Tobs belted two home runs in the lopsided victory.

The Tobs got on the board early and often on Monday night. Joe Costigan lined the first pitch of the game into Right Field for a base hit. Zach Mitchell, and Ryan Mathews both reached base on bunts, one error and one base hit. Daughtry quickly extended hitting streak to an even ten games, with an infield single that was a high chopper that just got passed the Blowfish starting pitcher Blake Forslund. The Daughtry single put the Tobs up 1-0.

Tony Wiber was walked forcing in another run, Alex Jones had an RBI groundout to make the score 3-0. That was the first out of the inning. Keith Morrisroe had another infield single to shortstop scoring another run and putting runners on first and third base. Morrisroe then stole second base and the ball was thrown into center field, scoring Wieber and advancing Morrisroe to third base. Jacob Davis then had an RBI groundout to shortstop scoring the sixth run of the inning.

Angelo LaBruna was the ninth man to bat in the inning and tapped back to the pitcher to end the inning. The opening frame for the Tobs was a good one scoring six runs on four hits with two Columbia errors committed. Wilson was up big after a half of an inning by a score of 6-0.

The Blowfish cut into the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Tyler Jackson hit a home run and a sacrifice fly by Gabe Grammer plated both runs.

The Tobs quickly answered with three runs in the top of the third when Daughtry hit his second homerun of the season to deep right field. Morrisroe added an RBI single and then came around to score on a passed ball. The score after three innings of play was Wilson 9 and Columbia 3. The Blowfish added another run in the top of the forth off of reliever Daniel Brown for Wilson. The score after four innings stood at 9-4 Tobs.

Wilson had another huge inning in the top of the fifth when they sent ten men to the plate. The Tobs had five more men touch home plate in the inning highlighted by a two run homerun by Ryan Mathews. The score at the end of 5 innings was 14-3 Wilson.

The Blowfish sliced into the Wilson lead in the bottom of the sixth by pushing three runs across home plate, highlighted by a two run homerun by Chase Vergason. That made the score 14-6 through six innings. The Blowfish added two runs off Lance Honeycutt in the ninth to make the final 14-8 Wilson.

The Winning Pitcher was Daniel Brown (1-0) and the loss was credited to Blowfish starter Blake Forslund (0-1). Steve Nikorak started the game for the Tobs but ended up with the No Decision.

The Tobs are off Tuesday, and will put their four game-winning streak on the line on Wednesday night against the Steamers in Edenton. The first pitch is scheduled at 7:05pm. No starting pitching match-up has been announced yet.
