Steamers Cling to Lead, Hold off Daredevils

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - Edenton took a 3-0 lead into the eighth only to hold on for the 3-2 win in Kill Devil Hills, evening the season series between the DareDevils at two games apiece. Joshua Branstetter pitched seven innings of four hit ball to pick up win number three and Connor Sinclair went 5.2 innings in the losing effort.

The Steamers used back-to-back triples from the first two hitters in the line-up; Brian Blasik and Mitch Wells to take a 1-0 lead over the DareDevils in the top of the first. Joey Wendle then grounded out with Wells on third to give the Steamers the 2-0 lead after the top of the first.

Not until the top of the seventh did the Steamers scratch out another run. Vinnie Mejia started off the rally with a double and then Adam Giacalone, making his first start of the season for the Steamers reached on an error that allowed Mejia to come home and score to increase the Steamer lead to 3-0.

Branstetter allowed only four hits to the DareDevils in seven innings of work for the Steamers before exiting after facing one batter in the bottom of the eighth and leading 3-0. Right-handed pitcher Jordan Egan entered the game and hit Jordan Keur to put runners on first and second. Jordan Hankins was then walked by Egan to load the bases before Donnie Corsner popped out for the first out. Chris Baker grounded into a fielder's choice that brought one run home for Outer Banks. Short stop John Polonius, attempting to finish a double play, threw the ball high over Zach Stewarts head at first to allow Keur to score the second run of the game for the DareDevils and cut the Steamer lead to 3-2 heading to the ninth.

The righty Ethan Cole finished the bottom of the eighth for Edenton and remained on the mound in the bottom of the ninth. Cole was able to retire the DareDevils in the ninth in order and earn his first save of the season for the Steamers.

Branstetter picked up his third win of the season against no losses in snapping the Steamers three game losing streak while Connor Sinclair falls to 0-1 on the season for the DareDevils.

Edenton travels to Peninsula tomorrow night for the first time in 2011 to take on the Pilots.
