Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The baseball gods have come for the Fayetteville SwampDogs.

After an opening week that saw them win four games in their final at-bat, the SwampDogs have now dropped four straight games, losing to Morehead City 6-2 on Monday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium in a game that featured the first triple play of the season.

Dom Macaluso (1-1) had a solid, if unspectacular, outing for the 'Dogs, tossing six innings and allowing just two runs on seven hits. He walked four and struck out three, and left with the SwampDogs trailing just 2-1. But the quartet of Alex Belew, Mike Hebert, Will Strack, and Mark Kuzma allowed four more Marlin runs, squashing any hopes of a comeback.

Once again, the offense struggled for Fayetteville (7-5), managing just one baserunner on a Marlin error in the first three innings against starter Chase Wellbrock (1-0). It appeared as though the bats had come to life after Dillon Checkal and Eric Grabe singled to start off the fourth, but Joe Vaskas hit a one-hopper right over the third base bag, and Marlin third baseman Grant Clyde started the 5-4-3 triple play to retire the side.

The SwampDogs also had a chance late, with Vaskas once again at the plate and runners and second and third with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. But Morehead City (8-6) brought on closer Tyler Moore, who struck out Vaskas looking to end the threat. Moore then pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.

The SwampDogs will now head to Columbia to begin and home-and-home with the Blowfish. First pitch Tuesday is set for 7 p.m. at Capital City Stadium. The teams switch venues Wednesday night for Ladies' Night at J.P. Riddle Stadium, where the first 500 ladies will receive a rose courtesy of Owen/Bordeaux florists. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
