FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Former Fayetteville SwampDog Mike McKenry made his first major league start last night, catching at batting seventh for the Pittsburgh Pirates in their 3-1 victory over the New York Mets.

McKenry finished 0-for-3 at the plate, flying out once and grounding out twice. He's now 0-for-11 at the top level, still seeking his first major league hit.

A member of the 2005 SwampDogs, McKenry made his major league debut last season as a September call-up while with the Colorado Rockies. Traded to the Red Sox in the offseason, he had spent all of 2011 in Pawtucket, the Red Sox AAA affiliate, before being traded to Pittsburgh late Sunday night for a player to be named later.

McKenry was part of the first team in Fayetteville under current head coach Darrell Handelsman. He's the second player from that team to start a game in the majors this season, joining former teammate Andy Dirks of the Detroit Tigers.

The right-handed hitting McKenry was batting .274 in 29 games with Pawtucket this season. Drafted in 2006 by the Rockies, he's reunited in Pittsburgh with Pirates manager Clint Hurdle, who was manager in Colorado at the time McKenry was drafted.
