Forest City Owls News Release
ASHEBORO, N.C. - In a classic pitchers duel, the Forest City Owls outlasted the Asheboro Copperheads, 3-1, Monday night at McCrary Park. Forest City leads the season series 2-0, the Owls having defeated the Copperheads in the season opener on May 31. The Copperheads entered the game with a league-best 10-2 record. Forest City is the only club to have defeated Asheboro more than once thus far this season. The Owls improve to 7-6, while the Copperheads fall to 10-3.
Rice right-hander Jeremy Fant made his first start of the 2011 season for the Owls. Fant, a key member of Forest City's stellar 2010 pitching staff, was nearly untouchable this evening. He threw eight innings, allowing just one run on four hits, striking out five batters and walking three. Fant walked away with his first victory of the 2011 campaign.
Chuck Fontana took the mound for Asheboro, tossing a fine game of his own. He worked six innings, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out three batters and walking two. Fontana went home with his second loss of the season.
The Owls wasted no time in scoring their first run. CF Buddy Sosnoskie slapped the first pitch of the game into left field for a single. He was brought home four at-bats later by SS Reed Harper's single up the middle. Forest City led 1-0 through five innings of play.
Fant received more offensive support in the top of the sixth inning. After lacing a double with one out, Harper scored on a single to left-center off the bat of 3B Jordan Betts. The Owls enjoyed a 2-0 advantage after their half of the sixth.
Asheboro cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the sixth inning. 1B Trey Holmes shot a groundball into right field, bringing DH Marquis Riley around third. Owls RF Cameron Conner fired a laser home, but catcher Dan Burant was unable to hold on when Riley barreled into him at the plate. Forest City remained ahead 2-1 after six.
Forest City tacked on another insurance run in the top of the ninth. With one out and a runner on third, Burant drove a liner into right field for a single, scoring LF Michael Bishop. Owls closer Adam Izokovic entered the game in the ninth, charged with defending a 3-1 lead. Izokovic retired the Copperheads in order in the final frame, racking up his fourth save of the season.
Harper and CF Buddy Sosnoskie each had multi-hit games for Forest City. Harper had an RBI single in the first inning and doubled and scored a run in the sixth. Holmes was Asheboro's top offensive performer, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Owls return to McNair Field tomorrow night, when they will take on the Martinsville Mustangs. First pitch is set for 7:30 PM.
