Wilmington Wins Back and Forth Marathon against Keys

FREDERICK, MD - The Wilmington Blue Rocks (41-47, 10-8) scored six times over three extra innings to hold on and defeat the Frederick Keys (40-50, 5-16) 12-11 on Wednesday night. The Keys tied up the game four different times, while the 12 innings and four hours and 20 minutes marked the longest game on the year for the orange and black.

Wilmington began the scoring in the third inning. With two outs, Blake Perkins collected a single against Keys starter Zac Lowther. D.J. Burt followed with a walk before Perkins scored on a Gabriel Cancel single. An Emmanuel Rivera base knock then scored Burt to make it 2-0.

They added to their lead in the fifth. Vance Vizcaino was hit by a pitch, and he scored on a Perkins two-run home run.

Frederick scored their four runs in the sixth. Wilson Garcia singled and was followed by a Randolph Gassaway walk. Following a Preston Palmeiro strikeout, Jomar Reyes walked to load up the bases. Blue Rocks starter Daniel Tillo force Yojhan Quevedo to pop out to bring up Collin Woody. On an 0-2 pitch, Woody roped a double down the left field line to clear the bases. He would advance to third on the throw, and one batter later Cole Billingsley brought in Woody with a double to tie up the game at four.

Rudy Martin gave the Blue Rocks the lead in the eighth. Nick Heath began the inning with a double. Following a Nate Esposito fly out, Martin launched his second home run of the year to give the Blue Rocks a 6-4 lead.

The Keys tied up the game in the bottom of the ninth. T.J. Nichting and Chris Clare each singled, and Wilson Garcia drew a walk to load the bases. Gassaway then hit a sacrifice fly, and Palmeiro tied the game at six with a single.

Wilmington scored three times in the top of the 10th. With Heath starting at second base, Esposito was hit by a pitch. Heath then scored when Reyes threw a ball away toward third on a Martin Bunt. Pinch hitter Travis Jones scored Esposito on a single, and Martin scored on a fielder's choice to make it 9-6.

Frederick tied the game once again in the bottom of the inning. With Reyes starting at second base, Quevedo flied out to left. After Woody walked, Billingsley popped out to third. Nichting then drove in Reyes with a single that moved Woody to second. That set up Clare who roped a double to left field to score Woody and Nichting and tie the game at nine.

A Tyler Erwin error allowed Cancel to score in the top of the 11th. Meibrys Viloria then hit an RBI single to make it 11-9 Blue Rocks going to the bottom half of the frame.

The Keys tied the game once again in the bottom of the frame. Daniel Fajardo was the man that started at second base, and he moved to third on a single. Fajardo was thrown out at home after a ground out that allowed Palmeiro to reach. A long single from Reyes loaded the bases, and Quevedo plated two with a single to tie it up.

In the top of the 12th, Cancel drove in the eventual winning run with a single. The Keys got the tying run to third in the 10th, but two fly outs ended the ballgame and secured the 12-11 win.

Both teams used five pitchers, but it was Justin Camp (1-1) that earned the win for the Blue Rocks. The right-hander surrendered two runs (one earned) over two innings. Isaac Silva (0-1) took the loss for the Keys. He surrendered an unearned run over 1.2 innings.

The Keys and Blue Rocks conclude their series on Thursday evening. The Keys send right-hander Cristian Alvarado (8-6, 4.17) to the mound against Blue Rocks right-hander Jace Vines (2-8, 5.11).
