Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AUGUST 4, 2011) - Winston-Salem brought the lumber on Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark, plating 11 runs behind multi-hit games from six different hitters on the way to an 11-0 win over Wilmington in the series finale. The win gave the Dash their third straight series victory and kept the lead at two games for the final playoff spot in the Southern Division.
Winston (22-16, 54-54) began the run parade in the second inning against Blue Rocks starter and reigning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week Tim Melville. Ian Gac led off the frame with a single and advanced to third when Nick Ciolli doubled. Gac scored when Juan Silverio grounded out, and Ciolli crossed home on Kevin Dubler's double. Austin Yount followed with a single to score Dubler and put Winston up 3-0.
The Dash doubled the lead in the third. Jared Mitchell walked to start that inning and moved to second on Brady Shoemaker's ground out. Gac then walked before Ciolli singled home Mitchell. Silverio followed with a single to load the bases, and Dubler walked to score another run. That spelled the end of the night for Melville; Michael Mariot came in to relieve him. Yount greeted Mariot with a sacrifice fly to plate Ciolli.
The scoring continued into the fourth inning when Shoemaker doubled and later scored on a single by Gac.
In the fifth, Silverio struck out to start the frame but reached first on a wild pitch. Dubler followed with a double to right-center field to score Silverio. Saladino doubled with two outs to score Dubler and put Winston-Salem up 9-0.
The Dash plated two more runs in the eighth when Mitchell singled and scored when Ciolli walked with the bases loaded. Shoemaker singled after Mitchell and later crossed home on a passed ball. The single by Mitchell extended his hitting streak to a career-best nine games.
The Blue Rocks (15-24, 51-57) went silent in the ninth as they were for much of the ballgame, giving the Dash their fifth shutout win of the season. Andre Rienzo made his first start since coming off the disabled list and threw four solid innings. He gave up three hits and struck out four, but did not qualify for the victory. Leroy Hunt (2-1) threw three two-hit innings in relief and picked up the win. Melville (8-7) was hit with the loss after giving up six runs (all earned) in 2.1 innings.
Six Dash hitters had multiple hits in the ballgame including three from Gac. Dubler racked up two doubles and three RBI. Saladino, Shoemaker, Ciolli, and Silverio were the other hitters with more than one base-knock in the game.
Winston-Salem opens up a three-game series with Frederick starting on Friday night at 7 p.m. LHP Joe Serafin (3-8, 5.87) is scheduled to start for Winston-Salem against LHP Nathan Moreau (10-8, 3.95).
