Ware, Wiley Win It For Hillcats

Frederick, MD - L.V. Ware and Keenan Wiley combined to go 5-for-7 Thursday night and scored all four runs for the Hillcats out of the eight and nine holes in the lineup. The Hillcats totaled 10 hits for the second straight night as a team and went on to win 4-2, taking the series 2-1.

The Keys took advantage of a Hillcats error in the bottom of the first. With one out and a runner at first, Manny Machado hit a soft groundball to the Phil Gosselin. The ball rolled under Gosselin's glove and he was charged with an error. Steve Bumbry advanced from first to third on the play. A ground out scored Bumbry and then Miguel Abreu singled home Machado. Both runs would go unearned and the Keys led 2-0.

Lynchburg tied the game with two runs in the fifth. Keenan Wiley and L.V. Ware both reached on bunt singles to start off the inning. After two failed sacrifice bunt attempts, Todd Cunningham was hit by the pitch to load the bases. Andrelton Simmons grounded out to first to drive in Wiley. Then Phil Gosselin hit a sacrifice fly to left, which brought home Ware and tied the game at 2-2.

RHP Gary Moran started for the Hillcats in his Advanced-A ball debut. He went six innings, allowed five hits, two runs, both unearned, while walking one and striking out four. He would take a no decision as the game was tied 2-2 into the ninth.

Wiley and Ware put the ‘Cats on top in the final frame. Wiley singled with one out. Ware followed with a triple down the right field line, putting the Hillcats up 3-2. Cunningham brought home Ware with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Up 4-2, Lynchburg brought LHP Ryan Buchter into to the game. Buchter sat down the Keys in order to record his 11th save of the season.

RHP Eliecer Cardenas (3-1) earned the win throwing a scoreless eighth inning. RHP Randy Henry (0-1) surrendered two runs in the ninth to take the loss.

Lynchburg is now 15-24 in the second half after the win.
