Lynchburg Takes Rubbermatch In Frederick

The Keys plated two unearned runs in the first inning but did not score the remainder of the night as they fell to the Hillcats, 4-2. Tied at two entering the ninth, Lynchburg scored two runs off RHP Randy Henry to take their first lead of the game. With the loss, Frederick fell to 25-14 in the second half of the season.

After LHP Jake Pettit tossed a scoreless top half of the first, the Keys scored two runs off RHP Gary Moran in the bottom of the inning. In his Carolina League debut, Moran gave up a leadoff single to RF Steve Bumbry. After a fly out by 2B Jonathan Schoop, SS Manny Machado hit a groundball that was booted by 2B Phil Gosselin. On the play, Bumbry motored from first to third. 1B Aaron Baker brought home Bumbry out a groundout to first and CF Miguel singled home Machado later in the inning.

The Hillcats, however, kept the Keys off the scoreboard the remainder of the night.

Pettit started his fifth start in Frederick with four scoreless innings. In the fifth, Lynchburg finally got to the lefty. RF Keenan Wiley and CF L.V. Ware started the inning with back-to-back bunt singles. The Hillcats then loaded the bases when Pettit's 1-2 pitch plunked DH Todd Cunningham. SS Andrelton Simmons got the ‘Cats on the board when he hit a weak grounder to first. 1B Aaron Banks' only option was the force at first base. One batter later, the game was tied. Phil Gosselin hit a sac fly that scored Ware from third to tie the ballgame at two.

For the first time since joining the Keys, Pettit did not pick up the win in a game he in which he started. Pettit got a no-decision on the night after surrendering two runs on four hits over five innings.

Thursday night's contest remained tied at tie entering the ninth despite the Keys loading the bases in the seventh inning.

The Hillcats plated two runs against Randy Henry in the top of the ninth including a RBI triple by L.V. Ware. Keenan Wiley and Ware, the eighth and ninth hitters in Lynchburg's lineup, scored all four of the Hillcats' runs in the game.

LHP Ryan Buchter retired the Keys in order in the ninth as he notched his 11th save of the year. RHP Eliecer Cardenas improved to 3-1 on the season for Lynchburg after tossing a perfect eighth inning.

Frederick hits the road on Friday for the start of a six-game road trip. The Keys will face the Winston-Salem Dash on Friday evening at 7 p.m. LHP Nathan Moreau (10-8, 3.95) will take the hill for the opener while his counterpart will be LHP Joe Serafin (3-8, 5.87).
