Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 5-2 at home to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Sunday. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton improved to a league-leading 16-0-1, including 9-0 on the road, with the win.
The teams skated scoreless through the first period with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defenseman Noah Welch coming up with the play of the frame diving head-first into his own crease to rob Sound Tiger Evgeny Tunik of a sure goal.
There were 13 power plays called through the first two periods, including ten in favor of the Penguins who converted the second of a pair of two-man advantages in the middle frame for a 1-0 lead as Matt Hussey scored his ninth goal of the season at the 9:48 mark off assists from Chris Kelleher and Ryan Stone.
Tomas Surovy doubled the Penguins' lead to 2-0 just 22 seconds into the third period with another power-play goal, his eighth marker on the year, off an assist from Stone. Colby Armstrong made it 3-0 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with his seventh goal of the season 8:01 later off an assist from Stone, but the Sound Tigers rallied.
Jeff Hamilton upped a scoring streak to three games with his second goal of the year with 3:30 left to play off assists from Masi Marjamaki and Jeff State to put the Sound Tigers on the board and within 3-1. Cole Jarrett then cut the lead to 3-2 with his first tally of the year just 1:24 later off assists from Rob Collins and Bruno Gervais. State's assist was his first point as a Sound Tiger.
However, Surovy wrapped home a rebound of his own shot for an unassisted goal at the 18:32 mark to make it 4-2 Penguins and completed a hat trick on an empty-net goal with 34 seconds left to play after the Sound Tigers had pulled netminder Chris Madden in favor of an extra attacker. Michel Ouellet earned the only helper on the final goal to improve an assist streak to eight games and a point streak to 12.
Surovy was the first star of the game, Stone the second and Hamilton the third. Madden made 29 saves for the Sound Tigers while Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 to earn the win. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton had a 34-30 shots on goal advantage and was 2 for 11 on the power play. The Sound Tigers were 0 for 6 on the advantage.
