Manchester Monarchs News Release
LOWELL, MA - Left wing Jeff Tambellini's sniper of a slap shot lifted the Manchester Monarchs over the Lowell Lock Monsters, 5-4, in overtime at the Tsongas Arena in front of a crowd of 3,850 fans on Sunday evening. The Monarchs (10-3-0-2) are in sole possession of second place in the Atlantic Division. Lowell (9-7-1-2) remains in third place in the Atlantic Division.
After Lowell had a goal waived off as center Colin Forbes whacked the puck in the net with a high stick, the Monarchs answered back with an even strength goal by defenseman Mark Ardelan at 13:38 of the first period. Right wing Ryan Murphy, along with center Connor James and Ardelan, created a 3-on-2 situation. James raced to the net and Murphy slid the puck over to Ardelan at the top of the right face-off circle. Ardelan sent in a slap shot past Lowell's goaltender Vitaly Kolesnick for a Monarchs 1-0 lead.
The Monarchs made it 2-0 off the face-off at 15:52 of the first period. Left wing Noah Clarke won the draw and fed the puck over to right wing Brad Smyth who gently snuck the puck past Kolesnick with his backhand.
Left wing Paul Healey put the Lock Monsters on the board at 6:32 of the second period. Healey scored on the rebound from defenseman Mitch Love's shot from the point. Left wing Gord Dwyer also assisted on Healey's power play goal.
Just under two minutes later, the Monarchs regained their two-goal lead with Smyth's second of the evening. Clarke and Smyth connected again as Clarke fed the puck over to Smyth, who was positioned on Kolesnik's doorstep. Smyth flipped the puck into the net for his seventh of the year. Right wing Konstantin Pushkarev also assisted on the goal at 8:22 of the second period.
Healey collected his second power play goal of the evening, as there was one-second remaining on the 5-on-3 power play for the Lock Monsters. Center David Gove slid the puck over to Healey at the left face-off dot who tossed the puck in the net behind Monarchs goaltender Adam Hauser. Dwyer collected his second assist of the night.
The Lock Monsters tied the game at 3-3 as center Keith Aucoin flipped the puck up and over Hauser at the 15:48 point of the second period. Right wing Chad Larose and Forbes assisted on the tying goal.
Clarke was rewarded for a great individual effort as he stole the puck at center ice and fought off Lock Monsters players for his third goal of the season. Clarke first backhanded the puck into Kolesnik and then picked up his own rebound for the tally at 9:47 of the final period.
Larose tied the game with 2:19 remaining in the game. The Monarchs turned the puck over to in their zone and Aucoin picked it up, passed it over to Larose for his ninth of the season.
With Healey in the box for a five-minute high-sticking major on center Connor James, the Monarchs shuffled the puck on the power play. Defenseman Denis Grebeshkov sent the puck down to right wing Lauri Tukonen down at the left corner. Tukonen fed the puck to Tambellini at the center of the Lock Monsters' zone, who sent a laser beam in on Kolesnik for the 5-4 win at 2:46 of overtime.
Hauser (6-2-1) earned his sixth win of the season stopping 32 shots by the Lock Monsters. Kolesnik (8-6-0) took the loss with 23 saves.
Manchester went 1-for-5 on the power play. Lowell was 2-for-10 with the man advantage.
