Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - A tilt between the two top teams in the AHL went the distance on Friday night, as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins fell 4-3 to the Toronto Marlies in a shootout at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

It was the first game of the season for the Penguins to reach the shootout, and the first game in which Wilkes-Barre/Scranton lost when it had a lead going into the third period.

The Penguins were up 3-0 on the Marlies in the third period, but three shorthanded goals by Toronto on two penalty kills spread over 2:34 of game time brought the game to a 3-3 tie.

In the shootout Antoine Bibeau did not allow a goal to any of the Penguins' three shooters, while Nikita Soshnikov buried the only goal of the best-of-three showdown on the Marlies' third attempt.

Clark Seymour opened the scoring for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for the second game in a row at 6:59 of the first period. The goal was Seymour's second of his AHL career after he netted his first on Wednesday night at Lehigh Valley.

Scott Wilson pulled off a slick move in the neutral zone and scored on a breakaway at 14:01 of the first, giving the Penguins a 2-0 lead.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton extended the margin of its lead to 3-0 with a Derrick Pouliot power play goal at 2:22 of the third period. Wilson added an assist on Pouliot's tally, granting Wilson his team-leading eighth multi-point game of 2015-16.

Toronto came storming back with two shorthanded goals on the same penalty kill from Mark Arcobello and Soshnikov at 4:38 and 5:17. Arcobello's goal ended the Penguins' franchise-record team shutout streak at 225:02. The Penguins had not allowed a goal in their previous three games.

As soon as that penalty expired, Toronto went back to the box, sending Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to its seventh power play of the game. However, the Marlies' Richard Clune scored the game's tying goal with a shorty at 7:12 of the third.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's man advantage finished the game one-for-seven. The Penguins' penalty kill successfully killed all four of the Marlies' power plays, including one during overtime.

Brian Foster, appearing in his first game for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, stopped 27 of 30 shots, while Bibeau turned aside 39 of 42 shots faced.

The Penguins, now 20-5-0-1, hit the road for the team's first trip to visit the Syracuse Crunch this season. In the two teams' single meeting this year, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton emerged victorious on home ice by a score of 6-2. Puck drop for the Penguins and Crunch is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at Oncenter War Memorial Arena.
