HOUSTON, TX - Defenseman Marty Wilford scored at 3:04 of overtime as the Manchester Monarchs edged the Houston Aeros, 2-1, in front of a crowd of 4,691 at the Toyota Center on Saturday night.
The Monarchs (2-2-0-1, 5 points) move into a tie for fourth place in the Atlantic Division with the win. The loss snapped a five game winning streak for the Aeros (6-2-0-0, 12 points), who lead the West Division.
Right wing Kirby Law put the Aeros on the board with a shorthanded goal at 2:25 of the first period. Law skated down the left wing and rifled a shot just inside the near goal post and past Monarchs goaltender Barry Brust. Left wing Josh Olsen and defenseman Kurtis Foster assisted on Law's sixth of the year.
For the second night in a row, Monarchs left wing Jeff Giuliano scored the tying goal. As the Monarchs battled in a five-on-three shorthanded situation, Giuliano broke away and slipped the puck under Aeros goaltender Josh Harding. Giuliano's unassisted shorthanded goal came at 19:23 of the second period.
Wilford scored his second of the season and his first game-winning goal from the far face-off circle to give the Monarchs their second win of the season. Left wing Noah Clarke and defenseman Denis Grebeshkov assisted on the overtime power play goal.
Brust (1-0-0) earned his first win of the season, stopping 26 of Houston's 27 shots. Harding (5-2-0) took the loss for the Aeros, stopping 44 shots.
The Monarchs were 1-for-7 on the power play, while Houston went 0-for-6.
The Monarchs return home to face the 2005 Calder Cup champion Philadelphia Phantoms at 7:35 p.m. on Saturday, October 29 at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Ticket availability for next Saturday's game is single seats in the Gold level and 2,600 seats in the Silver level.
