Rats Take Down Lock Monsters 6-4

Albany, NY - The Albany River Rats (3-3-0-0) scored three times in the third period to snap a tie score and lift themselves to a 6-4 victory over the Lowell Lock Monsters (2-2-0-0) at the Pepsi Arena on Saturday night.

Albany took the lead just 46 seconds into the match, with a one-timer by Aleksander Suglobov, who fired home a pair of tallies on Friday at Tsongas Arena. But the Monsters answered, just seconds into their first power play of the night, as Pavel Brendl notched his team-leading third of the season at 2:33. Colin Forbes gathered in his own rebound and tucked home his first of the season just a couple minutes later to make it 2-1. Brad Richardson earned his first career point with an assist on the play. The Rats tied it up late in the period when Peter Vrana finished off a give-and-go with Barry Tallackson with backhander at 18:18 and it was 2-2 after one. The Lock Monsters led in shots 24-12.

Vrana added his second of the game just 32 seconds into the middle stanza with a shot from between the circles. The hitting picked up as the period progressed, and culminated with a tilt between Cody McCormick and Rats rookie David Clarkson. Late in the second frame, the Monsters tied the score again. Paul Healey created a two-on-one down low and slipped a perfect feed across to Forbes, who slammed in his second of the night. Lowell led in shots 33-22 after 40 minutes.

Early in the third the Rats bounced back in front for a third and final time in the game. Clarkson chipped in a loose puck from the right side of the crease past Vitaly Kolesnik to make it 4-3 at 1:37. With just over nine minutes remaining they extended their advantage with a Ryan Murphy power play goal to push the lead to two. The Rats added a sixth goal with less than three minutes remaining, only to be answered 36 seconds later by Keith Aucoin to make it 6-4 in favor of the home team. The Lock Monsters suffered defeat despite outshooting Albany 45-31.

On Sunday the Lock Monsters head to Portland for a 4:05 p.m. start. They return home for a 7:05 p.m. match against the reigning Calder Cup Champion Philadelphia Phantoms on Wednesday, October 26th.
