Dayton Dragons News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa-The Cedar Rapids Kernels overcame a 5-0 deficit on the way to an 11-7 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Sunday afternoon. The Kernels, who have won 10 of their last 13 games, have won all five meetings with Dayton this season.
Dayton's Byron Wiley had another big game in a losing effort. Wiley collected four hits including a two-run home run and a two-run double. The homer was his 10th of the year. Last Sunday at West Michigan, Wiley hit three home runs and drove in six runs in a 20-11 loss.
Wiley's two-run double in the top of the first inning gave Dayton a 2-0 lead. The Dragons added three more in the third. Josh Fellhauer walked to start the inning and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Mendez. After a single by Cody Puckett, Wiley homered to right to make it 5-0.
But Cedar Rapids scored five times in the fourth against Dragons starter Lance Janke to tie the game, getting a two-out, two-run triple from Darwin Perez to even the score.
Puckett belted a solo home run in the top of the fifth to give Dayton a 6-5 lead. It was Puckett's 13th homer of the season.
Janke walked the first two batters in the bottom of the fifth and was replaced by Junior Martinez, who allowed a pair of RBI singles as the Kernels took the lead for good at 7-6. Martinez issued four walks in the sixth inning as Cedar Rapids scored two more runs to lead 9-6.
Dayton scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth before Cedar Rapids scored twice against Dragons reliever Ezequiel Infante in the bottom of the inning to close out the scoring.
Janke (4-5) suffered the loss. He allowed seven hits and seven earned runs in four innings with three walks and three strikeouts.
The Dragons finished with 10 hits. In addition to Wiley's three-hit day, Puckett and Andrew Means each had two hits. Fellhauer was 1 for 3 with two walks and two runs scored.
The Dragons (6-11, 34-53) play at Cedar Rapids on Monday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. against the Kernels. Matt Fairel (6-4, 2.98) will start for the Dragons against Manuel Flores (4-4, 3.75). The next home game at Fifth Third Field is Wednesday, July 15th against the Quad Cities River Bandits.
