
Capra, Cougars Stifle Loons

GENEVA, Ill. - For the second start in a row, the Kane County Cougars' Anthony Capra pitched seven shutout innings. Sunday afternoon he also flirted with a no-hitter, taking one into the seventh inning in the Cougars' 7-3 victory over the Great Lakes Loons in front of 5,285 at Elfstrom Stadium. Capra's bid ended on a clean double in the seventh, and he settled for the victory as the Cougars claimed their seventh win in the last eight games and 10th in the last 14.
Capra (4-6) retired the first 10 batters he faced before a walk in the fourth ended the perfection. He also walked a hitter in the sixth and then started the seventh with a walk before the Loon's Tony Delmonico doubled off the wall in center for the Great Lakes hit. Capra allowed the one hit, walked three and fanned eight in the win, his seventh quality start and third in four outings.
The Cougars built a 6-0 lead by scoring three in the fifth and three in the sixth. Dusty Napoleon, Chris Berroa and David Thomas nailed consecutive RBI singles off Bobby Blevins (6-7) to make it 3-0. In the sixth against Robert Boothe, Franklin Hernandez cracked an RBI double, Dusty Coleman scored on a wild pitch and Hernandez trotted home on an error. The Loons scored in the eighth off Scott Deal and managed two in the ninth against Daniel Thomas before Josue Selenis entered to notch the save.
The Cougars (11-6, 52-35) and Loons (6-11, 46-41) wrap up the the three-game series Monday at noon CDT. Mathieu Leblanc-Poirier (1-2, 2.63) will face Justin Miller (4-5, 4.53).
