Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - A day after halting Fort Wayne's ten-game winning streak, the Peoria Chiefs struggled on the mound and in the field as they fell to the TinCaps 8-4 Sunday afternoon at O'Brien Field. Chiefs pitchers had problems with their control throughout Sunday's contest, issuing a season-high ten walks in the loss.
Fort Wayne got a run off starter Chris Archer in the first. Blake Tekotte walked on four straight pitches to start the game, and Dan Robertson split the gap in left-center field for a RBI double scoring Tekotte to make it a 1-0 Fort Wayne lead.
The Chiefs came back with two in the second to take the lead. With one away, Jovan Rosa blooped a single to right and moved up to third on a stolen base and a throwing error by the catcher Griffin Benedict with D.J. Fitzgerald at the plate. Fitzgerald struck out swinging for the second out of the inning, but Junior Lake picked up his teammate by scorching double into left-center to tie the game. Drew Rundle came up and dumped a single into left to plate Lake and give the Chiefs a 2-1 edge.
The TinCaps reclaimed the lead in the fifth. With the bases loaded and Alberto Cabrera now on the mound, the Chiefs right-handed reliever walked Allan Dykstra to force in a run to tie the game. Cole Figueroa delivered a sacrifice fly to right to give Fort Wayne a one-run advantage. The TinCaps made it a two-run cushion when Jaff Decker scored from second on the same Cabrera offering, stealing third and then coming home on a wild pitch to make it 4-2.
Peoria and Fort Wayne traded solo tallies for two straight innings starting in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Flaherty clubbed his 11th homer of the season, a solo shot to left to get the Chiefs within one. Fort Wayne got that run back in the next half inning. Decker scored on another Cabrera wild pitch to increase the lead to two.
The Chiefs scored again in the bottom of the seventh. Fitzgerald lifted a single to right-center to lead off the frame. After a Lake bunt pop out, pinch-hitter Nelson Perez pulled a single through the right side to put runners at the corners with only one away. Mario Mercedes came up and ripped a single to left plating Fitzgerald to cut the Chiefs deficit to one yet again. The TinCaps put up another single tally in the top of the eighth. Tekotte hit a bloop single to left to score Benedict from second to make it a 6-4 score.
Fort Wayne put it away with two more insurance runs in the ninth off left-hander Chris Siegfried. Yefri Carvajal doubled down the right field line to score one run and Brayden Drake was walked with the bases loaded to force in the eighth run of the ballgame for the TinCaps.
Archer (3-3) went four-plus innings and allowed more than two runs for the first time in five starts. The right-hander gave up three runs on five hits, walking two and striking out seven. Cabrera gave up three runs in 3 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on three hits and walked four. Siegfried was tagged for two runs in 1 1/3 innings and gave up one hit while walking four.
